Intermittent smoke - 335D
Hi folks,
Recently my car has started to smoke (white/blueish) when letting off the throttle once heated up. It lasts for around 5mins then disappears for the rest of the journey. No error codes and boosts / drives as normal. During this 5mins the engine note changes, sort of a loud droning noise. It doesn't happen in the morning, when air temps are colder. No obvious leaks on the floor, though not had a proper look under the car. Car has the following changes: Not mapped apart from to delete the dpf error currently swirl flap delete dpf delete (straight pipe) Recently had glow plugs changed and oil change I suspect its oil from somewhere but why it should stop (guessing after being burnt off / out of the exhaust) I don't know. Any ideas what it may be? Looks rather embarrassing when its smoking away Many thanks, Joel

Have you lost any coolant? Reason I ask I've got a leaking egr cooler which intermittently gives white blue smoke at certain temps. But you will be using coolant.
Have you had the oil separator changed? This can become faulty and cause oil to go places it should not. |

Thank you Yoxall. Gives me a few things to check out.
I thought I had changed the oil separator but looking at pictures seems I have changed the wrong part out lol. I have changed the breather pipe I think, doh

No worries. My mechanic never changed the breather pipe only the breather itself. Wished he would of now. It's probably the pipe that's not been changed mines had all new vac hoses.
Can I ask why it has not been remapped if you have took the dpf out? Does the car run ok? I've Heard it should be remapped when you take the dpf out aperently it would smoke a lot and run like crap! That might also be a reason why it smokes it might be trying to do regens when there ain't a dpf any more. |

Hi I believe a faulty glow plug controller can cause some smoke at start up and at times when driving until warm. This is what is causing it with mine

Mine done that with 2 glow plugs down similar symptoms of turbo seals. The smoke always cleared After a couple of minutes light blue colour. Aperently incomplete combustion of diesel that causes it.
As said earlier a remap might help and give you a bit more power! Never a bad thing. Transforms the car. I got my boost hose done as well the red 1, I've got the forge Motorsport upgraded hose as the oem 1 normally can't handle the stock or remapped pressure and leaks, you can normally see a little oil/water puddle under your intercooler passenger side. Maybe get it plugged in and read the codes off the dme. Might tell you something. |

Ditto, I changed mine while it was all apart. Mine had only done 70k when it needed vac hoses and other bits. Should last longer really.
These cars are a labour of love. Nearly every week im doing something to mine or upgrading. My wallet would be massive if it was not for my car. Wouldn't change it tho, it's like an addiction! Lol ! |

I've just had mine connected to INPA as mine spits blue smoke in the morning at random. Boosts and drives like a train. I have interruptions to glow plug activation on cylinder 5 and 6. Suspect this is what it is.... old old plugs.

I only got my breather changed, my indi told me it's very rare for them to block.
when my manifold is off next I will be inspecting mine. It's probably 1 of the only hoses that's not been changed, apart from coolant ones. |
