Drinkers Package
Seeing as BMW offer a smokers package that you can opt not to have if you're not a smoker, why can't cup holders be part of an optional drinkers package?
Whilst the pre-LCI removeable tray wasn't the greatest design, this new super-slippery sliding cover and shallow tray setup you get in the LCI is even worse imho - you can't put anything on it as it just slides off! Given that I never drink on the move and have no need of cup holders, it would be nice to have the option of something sensible instead. Try putting your key in that ridiculous little shallow tray in front of the teflon-coated-zero-friction cup holder cover, then as soon as you pull away the key rolls out of the tray, across the cover and then down between either seat and the transmission tunnel Or is this only a problem in the 340i?

Same on the 4 series Rob.
Agree that the slidey cover is a step backwards - it's crap. I do use the cupholder occasionally but I would rather have the old cover style - much more useful as an oddments tray. Now, smokers pack - I don't partake in the filthy habit but will be speccing it next time.. why you may ask? Well have you ever noticed at night how dark it is in the cupholder area? Well, spec the smokers pack and you get a little LED in lower dash panel above the cupholder area Check yours - you will have the hole there - but no light..... worth it for £25 IMHO .

Absolutely agree, not enough storage space inside a 3 series and to make it worse they waste it by putting 32Oz cup holders in.
I'm driving a 430d convertible right now and what I didn't realise is LCI has done away with the ashtray unit....or is this a 4 series thing? It is just a rubber tray not deep enough to do anything, unlike my 'COIN BOX with lid' in my F30 pre LCI. |

slidey cover is awesome. Perfect for holding my phone without it falling onto the floor, and way easier to open if you have a cup in one hand, compared to that horrible clip in thing that you then had to throw on the back seat because there was nowhere to put it.

perhaps if you have stretchy arms like Mr Happy. Or you aren't already storing things like your sunglasses in there (new glovebox is tiny compared to the E90)

E90 cup holders were brilliant - much neater. Shame they dropped that design

The LCi 3 series gets ambient lighting around the radio/climate binnacle, so not as gloomy.

I'd like the LCI cup holder as think the removable tray is a real lash up, I also agree that there is no where near enough storage in the 3 series.
I end up putting the key in the glove compartment, why they can't just a slot in the dash for it I'll never know.

Out of interest, why would you not keep the key on you?

I have a cut a small piece of black rubber matting and fitted into the little slidy section in from of the cup holders. This stops the key sliding about. It's the thin stuff with holes in that comes from b&q in a roll. I have exactly thing same but cut to fit the floor of my boot as well.

Where? I don't want it in my pocket digging into my leg (I have the house keys on it)

OK. I just use the fob on its own, as I drive one of three cars. So short of having three sets of house keys, it works better.

Also a bit odd I noticed in a 1&2 series the door bins are divided nicely into 3 compartments. In the 3 we have just one huge sliding area!

Not had or noticed this issue myself
Fob in case with house keys go back into my pocket and use the tray ( pre lci) above cup holders as a phone holder - my I phone 4s in its book style case fits perfectly. Has the comfort pack so got an ambient led under the radio trim. Fitted the post lci trim but never wired up the LEDs
