Runflats and potholes
Just wondering what people's opinions are on runflats vs conventional tyres on potholes.
Discovered my runflats (front/rear) have a bulges due to going over a pothole. So it looks like I will have to replace all 4 tyres as the car is an F31 335D XDrive. Now I was thinking of going to conventional tyres (e.g. Michelin Pilot Super Sports) but was wondering if I am more likely to damage my 19" 403M alloys instead of the tyre if I hit another pothole on conventional tyres. Admit I would not want to replace another tyre but thinking it's probably cheaper than an alloy. So thoughts as to whether runflats/conventional are better on pothole roads? George |

Potholes can fcuk both types of tyre. Although I find the shock wave travel further through the car with RF's.I hit one pothole so hard with RF's, it dislodged my interior mirror.

Damage is far more likely with RFT in my experience - lost loads of them to pot holes and the like. Just no give in the sidewalk like you get with the regular tyres.
Add to that the PSS are so much more comfortable and it's a double win.

I noticed today my 19" RFT had a bulge when I was cleaning it. I do remember hitting a pothole pretty hard last week, but this is the first time in 8 years of using RFT's have I ever had a bulge in the side wall...
Quoted £181 for a Goodyear front tyre, luckily I took out RFT tyre insurance, so will be making a claim. I am not sure if RFT or non RFT are any better over potholes, but I am sticking with RFT's for now, as can have another 4 tyres in 3 years. Once all the tyres need changing, I may consider switching to non RFT to improve the ride quality, but for me its not a priority. I think the GY's are probably the best RFT out there IMO.

Had a chat with my local dealer and have a couple of options. One of those is a set of new 19" 401M Alloys and Pirelli P-Zero Run flat tyres for approx £170 more than a set of 4 Pirelli tyres. They have been sitting on the shelf for the year as good opportunity to get rid of them I suspect.
Means that I can use the 401M as the winter alloys and get a set of winters to put on them and use the P Zero for the summer tyres on the 403M's. So is the P Zero a decent tyre on the F31 335D XDrive? George |

Unfortunately, claiming council doesn't happen in our area. Several claims from other motorists, zilch results. Good luck if you can |

Ha exactly the same issue - bulges on both of my near side tyres. I think run flats have less give compared to normal tyres which can absorb more energy when you hit a pothole.
I also have tyre insurance thank god

I hit a pothole on the A90 a couple of weeks back and broke the front suspension top mount, wheel and standard tyre all ok, £104 for a new top mount and £54 for labour to change it out, called the council who put me onto Bear Scotland who have the contract for that road, they were very nice about it and have sent out a claims form, the pothole was filled within 36hrs but luckily I took pics the next day
Still not received the form yet mind you! |

Should send them a letter letting them know l,l be charging interest everyday it's not paid, HMRC seem to get away with it when they want underpaid tax back |

I hit a very bad expansion gap which had deteriorated across the width on the lane on the M5 near to me. I thought the tyres and wheels would have been completely buggered, they weren't, but the sound and shockwave is still very clear in my memory.

Conventional tyres also get 'pinched' and damaged by pothole impacts, often not visibly seen, but still can be compromised. If so, more likely to blow out without warning. Softer low profile tyre sidewalls typically lead to more damage transfer to the rim. The impact energy has to go somewhere. The taller the tyre sidewall the better chance of energy absorption, as there is a more effective spring characteristic. |
