Boot opened with key in pocket

After reading about this the other day I just had someone at my door trying to tell me that my car was unlocked and the boot was open.

Problem was it was 12:30am and we have a baby boy. The man at the door didn't speak good English and all we could make out was "open". We thought he was trying to get into the house!

Police were called before I noticed what he was saying and saw the boot was open.

All very embarrassing and stressful!

Must have happened when I leaned over to take off my shoes when I came home.

Why is the key so easy to operate in a pocket?!!

Seems to be happening to quite a few people recently.

Happened to me a few weeks back. Really freaked me out when my neighbour came knocking on my door. Luckily it did rain that night. Apparently you can buy a key case off eBay/BMW which should make it harder for you to depress the buttons. I've not bought one yet so I don't know how effective they are but worth a shot as they don't cost much...

It has never happened to me.
I would strongly recommend this leather holder for you .

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Key-Ho...EAAOSwHnFVnje9

Apart from being a strong holder it looks very striking, people always ask about it Last time when I had to handle keys to guys in a hotel to park my car they liked this item very much so when I left the hotel, did not even have to say which car I would like to get to the reception .

Happened to me once. I'm getting a key fob.

Amazing how someone would prefer to knock at your door at 12am rather than close the boot.

Yup. This happened to me while sleeping in a tent at Le Mans. Rolled over in the night on my keys which were lying next to me.

I would probably have done the same, if you close a car boot on a quiet street at 12AM its going to make a loud noise, if the owner or a neighbour looks out and sees you at the car they're likely to think your up to no good. If his English is so poor he couldn't explain the boot was open, its not going to be easy for him to explain his actions if he closes the boot himself especially as it's the first time this has happened to the owner.

You can code the car to require a longer press on the key fob to open the boot.

Yeah I was unfortunate that I chose to utilise this 'feature' whilst it was raining heavily. Boot open and all windows dropped, fortunately the sunroof didn't open as well. Key cover purchased from BMW the same day and never had a recurrence.

Just get one of these rubber condom type things... No false opening for me. Black looks OEM and no need to remove to operate!

It's a longstanding problem that's been around for a long time. You'd think bmw would have sorted something out by now

Good to see there's still some decent people out there that will make the effort to help others out.

Would recommend a genuine one though - much better quality.

I have mine on a carabiner and hang it from my trouser belt.
Never had the boot open accidentally, but I mainly do it this way so that I don't lose the fob whilst away from the car.

Ding! I coded mine to have to be pressed for 10 secs and then released before opening. After several instances before coding, I never had one in nearly 3 years.

I learned when tying my shoe laces to remove the keys out of my pocket or jacket as I found my boot used to be opened when going outside where as it was closed when I looked out of the window before hand.

I think that's exactly what happened to me except I was removing my shoes so wouldn't have noticed until the next morning if it wasn't for the helpful man, even if we did think he was trying to rob us!

Happened to me on a rainy night two days after getting my car. Fortunately I looked out to check my baby before bed and caught it before things got too wet.

I bought the BMW MSport key fob leather holder linked by subsy which is a nice blue to match and it's not happened since. Stupid money for a key holder but there you go.... it's BMW :-)

Bizarrely jinxed by having read this thread when it started......a neighbour knocked on the door one evening last week to say the boot was up! Has happened a couple of times previously in the garage where it's usually tucked up at night so a holder purchased from BMW eBay link above (thanks Mcdokika) and it's a good quality genuine product. I'll learn to live with the bulk for the piece of mind for random pocket triggering.....now if only it was toddler proof as well!

Twice now. Once pulling into work car park. Guy in the car behind asked if I'd chosen the "air brake option".
Second time the car was in the garage. So the garage door hit the open boot lid. Couldn't work out why the door would only open a few feet.
