Tesla S 85PD vs M4

You hear a lot of noise about how quick these wonder cars are off the line but no so quick once rolling it seems:

Not sure what those 700 ponies are doing....

Nothing to do with drag racing but that's got to be the best outfit she's worn so far:

true , true but then find P90D with Ludicrous upgrade (2x price of M3/M4). Pretty fast beast! 2.8sec if not mistaken. Still , I would prefer your M3 YMB!

Awesome stuff, think we'd better keep some of this F8X stuff in the Off Topic though.

Sorry F30 post. I'm inly replying the teaston deal thread which is popping up at the top of the list...it was the right place to place it though as it made it visible to all.

Indeed, when I posted I'd ordered an M3 people told me to put it in the main f30 forum not the off topic section.

An M3 is still a 3 series really, albeit one on steroids, and seriously good plastic surgery, so I think they should be welcome on the main forum.

Yep and it's a natural progression for many 3 series owners myself included I've dipped in and out between them over the years.

IIRC they change 50% of the parts (body/the whole drive train/chassis/suspension/engine/brakes/engine etc...) the stuff they share being interior mouldings and systems like idrive/air con/window lifts/central locking etc....

Electric cars are generally only good from 0-60, at higher speeds they start to fade. I would think a 330d would have a higher top speed than a Tesla P85D.

The owner says it's stock apparently, as Nisfan says the power can't be maintained.

It's torque that can't be maintained. The Tesla delivers 100% torque at a standstill and can maintain this to 60mph. The M4 can't match this (no internal combustion engine can). It's this torque that gives electric cars such good 0-60 times.

Power on the other hand is linear. At a standstill the Tesla produces 0hp but this rises to half power at 30mph and full power at 60mph. Full power is available to around 120mph at which point it starts to fall off, but not by very much.

Torque drops off from 60mph. At 120mph it has halved at 180mph it would have halved again (assuming the Tesla can reach that speed).

The M4 on the other hand has gears which allow it maintain torque and power for much longer.

The rolling start eliminates the Tesla's advantage and is why the M4 was not troubled by such high headline hp figures (500kg of extra weight in the Tesla might also have something to do with it!)

Hope this explanation makes sense!

M1 this morning, m4 next to a tesla 95s, I think. The tesla is enormous, width wise it seemed to dwarf the M4.

White tesla with privacy glass and massive glow in the dark centre console.

Indeed power is a function of torque x revs, no torque no power.

I test drove a Tesla and was hugely impressed by the sheer speed. Sadly I kept being impressed by the accelaration to the point whereby there is no way that the quoted range was anything near realistic.

Thought the handling was as expected at not great fun and lardy and the quality of plastics in nether regions shocking. Would have annoyed me.

Financially it was the right thing to do (and I know of several that have pushed the button) but Christ, it won't be long before I have no choice so whilst I do, petrol and character (and perhaps slower 0-60mph) it will be!

I feel that we are at a time when cars are generally so quick that it becomes a moot point as to which car do 0-60 in 3 or 4 or 5 seconds fact is they're all quick and therefore the way the performance is delivered is becoming more important.

I'd rather have 0-60 in 4 seconds with some drama (noise/bit of wheel spin etc...) than 0-60 in 3 with zero drama.

But I can certainly see why people would want the Tesla.

Absolutely. However, the M4 has 6 or 7 forward ratios available so it can manipulate the rpm and torque part of that formula.

The Tesla has one fixed ratio so it can’t. It is stuck with the torque and power characteristics described previously from 0mph to maximum speed.

Look at it another way. If the M4 was forced to use only gear would it have won?
