Is that the 'bad eggs' smell you sometimes get a whiff of when out and about?

The most you will ever notice is only when stationary with a window open and a light breeze, and you may get a very slight whiff of burnt caramel - probably more noticeable is the sense of hot exhaust, which you may notice if parking up during a DPF regen. Walking away you might notice the heat and pinging, same as you would get from a hard driven car. If it is the first ever regen it may be burning off any residues, cleaning materials or detritis on your exhaust. But most people won't notice a thing. You shouldn't get anything at all through the ventilation.

'bad eggs' is more likely the output from petrol catalytic converters - nothing like a DPF regen.

Do the BM's operate like the VAG cars that run the fan for ten minutes if you stop the car during a regen? Its a right PITA sometimes when you get someone running after you telling you you've left the car turned on!

Type of driving may mean they are mostly passive regenerations, or you just don't notice any active regenerations. They'll be happening, as you'd be having DPF issues by now, if they were not.

Regeneration intervals in typical driving are every 300 - 600 miles. EU6 compliant engines have an even more complex regeneration activity.

I wish the regen could be initiated, or at least indicated that it's happening.

My mileage is split between some long runs and then a short spell of very short runs.
If I new a regen was happening, I could keep driving until it had finished. Or start it if I knew I was on a longer run

When I had my 330d I could sense when it was regeneration, (engine note, gear holds, mpg drop off, etc.). I'd often continue/extend a trip to ensure it was complete. Was often a nuisance as regens' would start near home, or out for appointments, so an inconvenience to run on a few miles. It is one reason for going back to petrol, as I was wasting time and fuel, just to keep the engine from possible issues.

The new 30D engine is much better at hiding the regen. I hardly even notice it now. It is very discrete. Still a few tells though, but very subtle.

I can hear when mine is doing its thing as the exhaust note changes. They annoying thing is I'll do a few hounded miles then get 2miles from home and hear it start. I just end up driving around for a bit.

I was talking to BMW tech and he said dpf regen is disabled when driving in ECO mode.

Have not really checked if this is or is not the case.

However it does sound logical.

It might be worth those that regularly use it, asking the question.

If you did use Eco pro all the time, surely it wouldn't allow the filter to clog up??

I would have thought so.

A lot depends on what parameters have been set for triggering a regen.

I know on Ford to force one, it was over 2k revs, 50mph minimum and about 25 miles after the engine had come to temp.

Think all DPF are designed to clog up whatever the driving mode.
The byproduct of the fuel compression which gets trapped in the DPF willl remain the same in any mode.
Effectivatly the car has to raise the engine temp to enable a flush/regen of the DPF. I suppose its like wringing out a sponge full of water so you can dip it again in the water to absorb more water.

Got to love auto-correct : what exactly does "effectivatly" mean ??
