Winter tires in Portland
Just bought a 340i with 19 in staggered wheels and summer tires. I was thinking about not getting a winter set up, and just try to get through the mild winters here on my summers. Doable?

I've gone through a few NW winters here in Portland on summer-onlys. Once on Potenza's (Pontiac G8), once on Toyo Proxes T1Rs (Pontiac G8), and once on PSS's (335i). There are a few things worth mentioning: the compounds in summer tires wear a lot faster when the weather dips below 40 degrees or so, and that happens several times a year, especially in winter. This winter has been particularly warm, but next year we may not be as lucky. Also, once they hit that threshold, they lose traction *quick*. So be very aware of how grippy they are when cold, and don't do dumb 7/10ths driving bombing down the freeway when its 30 degrees out.

What I did was get a set of A/S (Conti DWS) for the winter. The weather in the Pac NW would kill snows too - they would wear far too soon. DWS seems to be the ticket so far.
