Speed Cameras
Hi all,
So I've been looking for a speed camera detector for a while. I've got ProNav so didn't want something that repeated everything I already have. Don't condone speeding but I travel a lot and sometimes you need something to watch your back and remind you to slow down. I've been using the Cyclops app on my iPhone for a few months now and I have to say I'm impressed. Seems accurate and is very reassuring. Only costs about £3/yr too! Coupled with a mag mount on the right side vent and a 3m lightening cable carefully hidden it's great. |

How do these speed camera phone apps work - do they need a signal? Or do they just use GPS?
Is the any circumstances where they "lose the signal" and dont actually work?

I use my phone and subscribe to the pocketgpsworld.com database which is compatible with Android, iOS and many satnavs.
The app just needs GPS location, once you download the latest version, it does not need to be connected to the internet which is handy when you are abroad/roaming. The database is updated every week - highly recommended. |

I use a Lynx Gt Lite, with came with a lifetime subscription to the Aura speed camera updates.
I find it really good, especially the smart alert function, which tells you when you're approaching a camera but only continues to beep if you're exceeding the speed limit Does warn you about cameras on both sides of the road which can be a PITA although I understand that it's a legal requirement for these devices now Don't know whether they're still sold They don't tell you about mobile cameras however and they are the f*****s which normally get you

Sounds a good idea. I've got a Road Angel detector and I've never understood why they have launched a separate dashcam instead of producing an combined unit.

I bought an Inforad K3 from Amazon. I put a small USB power plug in the ashtray socket and plug it in (it is the size of any other USB stick. It bleeps and flashes when approaching cameras in the database.
£39 with free for life standard updates or you can pay a small amount and update to known mobile camera sites too. (Plug it in your laptop to update.) Enough memory for all of Europe, and I will add Canada for when we go next month. Well chuffed with it. Discreet, battery operated if you really want to hide it or you don't notice it plugged in the ashtray anyway. |

Sounds like a decent bit of kit. Couple of questions though does it work if you leave it plugged into the USB charger in the arm rest and is it loud enough for you to hear it in there. Thanks !!

Cyclops on iOS seems great. Should also mention that it's free to download and has free updates for 30 days so stupid not to try it. VERY handy for the new 'stealth' cameras in the M6 etc. |

The paid for updated might be bad but the fixed cameras don't move much and to be honest, I update every month (when I get parking tickets out of the car for expenses time.) I would never rely on something that reckons it knows the portable gun areas anyway.

Tried Cyclops on my way home yesterday, seemed to work fine but as its country back roads not much to upset it!
Trip round the M25 on Sun so will give it a good workout then |

I think I'll have a look at cyclops, as my iPhone is already in the car, for hands free Bluetooth. Does cyclops use a lot of power i.e. do you need to power the phone? |

It uses a connection to check users ahead, it gives alerts for live mobile zones when other users flag them. I've found it very good so far. |
