Alot of it has to do with mileage / year you specify. I upped mine from 9K to 12K year and my insurance jumped $400/yr. Thats what you get for being honest.

Only with certain companies. BTW, what you get for being honest is your claim paid. Misrepresentations are a good way to ensure that doesn't happen. You guys do realize that the insurance contract places the burden upon you to notify the company of any material changes in risk, right?

Sorry that's not the best, USAA is good, but not untouchable, i just moved my grandfather out of USAA for more coverage on his Home, Auto, Vacation House, and Umbrella. I never tried until recently because I always assumed that USAA was untouchable for all those Vets.

For me that was the absolute best for all my auto and home insurrance. I've looked at so many companies I can't even count but I had several agents from other big companies flat out tell me that there's no way they can beat USAA. If I could find cheaper I would jump on it in a heartbeat. any suggestions?

A couple of questions, considering you're obviously an agent (not trying to start any heat here). I understand CA is not a no-fault state, but why the UM, especially at those limits? Do you have health insurance? If you do, UM seems kind of redundant, unless you plan on suing your own carrier for non-economic damages resulting from an uninsured/underinsured motorist. Also, why such low deductibles? Unless it's your fault or if it's not your fault and the other party has insurance, you're paying additional premium for a benefit you'll never get. I'd bet that if you bumped those up to at least $250 and $500 respectively, you're break-even would be realized quite quickly.

Again, not trying to start heat. But disparaging another carrier is not the best way to go, IMHO. Everyone's circumstances are different from an underwriting perspective. There's really no such thing as a 'magic insurance bullet'. The carrier that fits one person to a 'T', may be out in left field for another. In other words, your grandfather may fit your company's niche, but that doesn't necessarily hold true for everyone. Just my $.02.

You have a valid point, but the best way to go is with brokers (who don't charge fee's), they can shop through a multitude of carriers, such as i did for him. I had rates from everyone from Mercury, Safeco, Travelers, and so on. USAA I have seen be very low. Same with Wawanessa or whatever, usually lower than what I can get. But you'll never know if you don't shop.

IMO, an independent agent is definitely the way to go, especially come claim time. I know I'd rather have an agent familiar with insurance law and the policy contract on my side than an a CSR of the company that's denying my claim.

What you say about shopping is true, but it can sometimes have unintended consequences. At least the CA market is more stable than FL, so you probably have more leeway and room for error. But I can't tell you how many times I've seen people go away from a mature insurance program with stable rates for another that is lower only to have that young program constantly adjust its rates (usually upward) because it still doesn't have enough actuarial information to maintain stability. Worse than that, I've seen people switch Homeowners' carriers for a lower price only to get nonrenewed a year or two down the road and their original carrier is no longer writing new business. Like I said, at least your markets in CA are more stable.

As an insurance agent I see the worst stuff. Not fully first hand but I'll see it eventually, obviously the claims adjusters get to sort through all the claim specifics. But I figure I have liability for other motorists I may end up causing an accident with set at 100/300/100. I would want the same for myself or any passengers. If I'm hit by a Uninsured, or UNDERinsured motorist, some of these people drive with 15/30/10, state minimum. If I get hit by someone and have medical bills to pay, i want to be able to pay for the majority through insurance. What if my passengers don't have health insurance, then my UM will pay for them as well.

IMO, why have high liability for other if your not going to do the same for yourself or anyone you'd let ride in your car. Anything your insurance doesn't pay, it come out of pocket from the insured. As for my deductibles, I crack at least 1 to 2 windsheilds a year, or get rock chips, I've paid $50 bucks for 2 OEM windshields. And paid a difference in premium is more like $10 every 6 months for Comp, and $25 more for collision, the difference between 500 and 100 isn't too bad, and if you haven't read any of my posts about insurance, you all should have zero or the lowest ded. possible for Comp. you'll be shocked at how little the premium difference is for really low Comp. deductibles. Collision is the ded that generates premium. And cars aren't the only object which and be considered collisions. E.G. A shopping cart hit my car while drifting through a parking lot. This was considered a not at fault collision and i had to pay my higher deductible for leaving my car parked at Ralphs and a rogue shopping cart bumping it. That's why i have low deductibles, I'm insurance rich. Like the plates say Full Coverage.
