M2 vs M3/4 Seats
I know many suggest that the M2 interior is plain/lackluster and prefer the interior of the M3/4. I have an M3 and I find the seats to be tolerable, but not comfortable. I can never quite find the right setting, and I find myself always adjusting and fidgeting. I think its most the side bolsters digging into my thighs.
I haven't sat in an M2 or M235i, but the seats appear to be more comfortable. The side bolsters seem flatter, and the seats look supportive, yet more plush. Having the leg rest would probably be another plus as I have long legs. What are your thoughts? |

I find lack of leg rest in M3/M4 seats slightly disappointing, although the quality of the Merino leather is outstanding. It makes Dakota look cheap. Also I couldn't get over the fact that one cannot pick the color. You can order M235i in red, but not M2, kind of a big deal to me.

I don't see how the choice of a different color or material of seats would increase the price of the car, those could be optional items.

Its the same reason it doesn't say M2 on the sills and just M or why it doesn't have the M1 and M2 buttons on the wheel. Very simple things that don't affect cost. I even go as far to say Mirrors as well but we all know what a sore point that is. These little things along with the seats just pissed me off and why I went the M3 knowing I was sacrificing a potentially more playful car which the first reviews seem to be confirming.

I have an F80 and a 228i THP (same sport seats that come in the M2).
The F80's seats look sportier, but in reality, my 228i seats are more comfortable and give up little if any support for cornering. You're not missing anything compared to the M3 seats . . . They are nice, but far from a proper race seat

For buyers like me, we could care less or be willing to accept these little inconveniences, for a more playful car. |

I don't have a problem with the M235i seats being used in the M2.They are very supportive and also have the thigh extenders, which are very comfortable, especially when you are sitting in the car for a few hours.I was surprised that the M3 and M4 seats don't have them. They are a feature you just expect to be in a BMW.

Introducing variability into the manufacturing process adds cost. Toyota taught the auto world this in the 80s. It is why it was cheaper for Toyota to put a CD player in every single Camry instead of offering cassettes, back in the day. No changeover in production, no units sitting around because someone would rather get one with X. The M interior manufacturing line will simply make the exact same thing over and over and over... May not be cheaper in terms of materials and labor, but it is a fairly major process savings. The difference between 2 choices and 3 choices is fairly small. The difference between 1 choice (no choice really) and 2 choices is huge.
