Any Full Synthetic which meets the specs specified in the manual. Castrol is one, but there are different type of castrol, so u might want to call the auto parts store ahead of time and ask. OR run to the dealership. Pricing is usually on par.

Oh, I have plenty of time to answer, but I am not going to indulge your laziness.

BMW oil from the dealer. After all that is what is in there right now.
Then: LL-01 approved oils, which in the real world comes down to Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol 0W-30 (check the back of the bottle for LL-01). There are others, but you won’t find them easily. Then: Any 5W-30 that is ACEA A3. Hard to find though, since Americans like their 5W-30 on the thin side. Germans do not. Then: Castrol 5W-30 “synthetic” This is not the same as the BMW oil, but since it is the same company I would hope that they would be compatible. Then: Any 5W-30 synthetic that is ACEA A1. Does not meet BMW specs, but one quart should not be an issue. Note that there are different versions of Mobil 1 5W-30. The BMW approved one (ESP, LL-04) is hard to find. The ACEA A1 version without BMW approval is common. BOTTOM LINE; Pick up a couple of quarts from the dealer and keep them in your garage. Life is simpler that way. |

castrol 0W-30 which is hard to find here in US. made for 335i and turbocharged engines.
or Mobil1 0W-40 which many use. easier to find at local auto store (what i used) or the overcharged BMW 5W-30 that they put in every bmw car... I would go for 0W-30 Castrol but couldnt find any. and i dont know if you should mix different oils. not sure if it matters. |

I don't have the actual manual for my car yet as it has not yet been delivered. I downloaded the 2007 335xi coupe manual (which should be the same) and what it says is (UPPER case added for emphasis):
"If BMW high performance synthetic oil is NOT AVAILABLE, you can add SMALL quantities of other synthetic oil. Only use oils with the API SH specification or higher. Your BMW Center will gladly answer any questions regarding . . . [other] APPROVED synthetic oils. . . . . . . APPROVED oils belong to the 5W-40 and 5W-30 classes." The manual says info on approved oils can be found at www.bmwusa.com but I could not find, nor could the customer service rep tell me where it could be found. I want to know where to find BMW's official published information on the specfic brand names, specifications, SAE rating, etc. For instance I have read that the US brand of Castrol synthetic is not approved, but the German Castrol is approved. |
