So last year our holiday was taking the convertible to the Alps and staying in the Italian lakes and I haven't stopped reliving the moments of driving through the Alps since we've gone. This coming year my other half is going to be tight for holiday and we are going on a beach holiday later in the year so I have a problem that I will have no one to travel with. I can't be the only one in this position and as such thought I would put it to the floor to see if we can get a group of a few forum members to go on a trip across the Alps covering several mountain passes.

That looks amazing but 7 days would be a touch heavy for me. Already have a long holiday in Easter and a short one in the summer. If you were planning something like 4 days (including weekend) including travelling from to uk i would seriously consider.

I so want to do this. Wouldn't be able to take the kids due to the long hours on the car and one of them gets car sick!

I was thinking that May would be a good time to go given that the passes should be open and there is likely to be snow at the top of the majority of them. I tried to do the Stelvio pass last year but snow stopped play so this is top of the hit list this time round for me!

For anyone wanting to come can you confirm whether may works and if 7 days would work. Given the mileage of the trip I think we would struggle with a shorter timescale for the same distance but happy to talk through it or modify the route.

Man what a great drive. It does suck that it's a 7 day trip but given the distances it does look unlikely you could do it any less in comfort.

I so wish I could do this. Looked at what my other half has planned and 7 days isn't possible for me. If somehow you guys end up doing a different route in less days, please add a note in here. If not, enjoy it and add some photos.

Having just gone through the route with a fine tooth Combe it would be difficult to shave any time off of the trip. You could come along for the first 3 days and then shoot back to the uk given that we will be travelling along the northern ridge of the Alps for the first few days up till the day off in Saltzberg.

Ok so looking at dates, would it suit everyone if we met early on the Saturday morning of 7th May? Due to the distances of coming from Somerset I will be staying over in a travel lodge or holiday inn near the eurotunnel the night before. The first day will be quite a trek but with some careful coffee breaks it should be fine. This will then mean that we will be back on Saturday 14th.

I'm self employed so if the dates don't work for all involved then I'm flexible. What also would be an idea is having a meet everyone involved and talking through the routes, getting to know each other and we can nose around each others cars of course.

The personal highlights for me will be the Grossglockner Pass and the Stelvio Pass given that we tried for the Stelvio Pass last year and it was closed due to snow - it was almost October though!

Stelvio is over rated, the umbrail pass next door is much better if you actually want a decent pass to drive on. More space, more flowing corners, and virtually empty - because eveyone is busy driving on Stelvio

Stelvio is so popular, we had people rollerblading down it....Its like been stuck in a UK traffic jam but 3000 meters up in Alps

The guide you linked to in the first post says the high passes aren't open until June. It's a long way to go to find out the roads are closed! 😄

We have this trip booked as well with my mates! Doing Stelvio and a few others on the way to and from modena.

We did the fluella (sp?) pass a few years back - was brilliant

I hadn't realised that some of the high passes weren't open in May (I thought that they all opened then!) so would people be available in June? If so would you want to continue with the route here or do you like the look of the route on the E46 forum. Personally I don't really mind either way because they both look good.

I've already done the furka, grimsel and susten passes but would happily do them again in the E46 tour.

And that is the problem when arranging roadtrips. Everybody wants something different. So i just post details such as dates / routes / hotels and say to people they're welcome to tag along for some or all.

I went alone in 2014 and still had awesome time.

I think you're probably right there. Having done a longer trip last year I'm happy doing a whistle stop tour this year.

Verona was lovely last year as were the Italian lakes but I'm going back to the med again in August so happy to stay in the Alps.

Going to the Med, take 3.5 to go via Route des Grande Alpes.

Took one day to get to the starting point, then another 2.5 to get to Menton.
