Car detailing

Hello guys,
I opened this thread for those who tried, want to try or they are just interested in products for car protection exterior/interior.
I know that car detailing is a field in which some people have deep knowledge and there are products which can contribute in maintaining a car like brand new. Personally, I do not possess any knowledge in detailing thus I don't know if the idea of applying a ceramic coat or wax in a brand new car is any good. Anyone, who tried or just wants to share his opinion-review is more than welcome!

Does anyone have experience of the BMW range of cleaning products?
Is it worth going for them?

Not used any BMW products but I did look into detailing as this is my first black car and we live in hard water area and have a holiday home opposite a very muddy farm.

I enjoy keeping my cars looking good and quite enjoy detailing. (too much time on my hands). Black will be a big challenge.

I found a lot of useful info with a google search - best for folk to look at what suits them rather than paste loads of links etc. Like anything it is a bit subjective.

Personaly I find Autoglym extra gloss protection has worked best for me. I apply gently with microfibre cloth on a clean car. Apply very lightly in straightish sweeps rather than swirls. One panel at a time, avoiding rubber/black plastic bits. When dry after 30mins it just "flicks" off again in straight, light, random directions rather than the traditional rubbing/swirling. Use a clean microfibre cloth for a final finish in order to reduce the risk of scratching/swirls. They sell these cloths cheaply on amazon.

It wont stop stone chips or careless door dings but it does make the car easy to clean and protect from sap etc.

I have given the new car 3 "coats" already in prep for winter.

As most of the info on the net says, the key to succesfully detailing and preserving your paint finish is in how you wash the car in the first place.

Tips and Tricks

This thread would be a good for people to share details of what product they use for keeping various parts clean and gleaming!

In response to Bluezed "Does anyone have experience of the BMW range of cleaning products?" Personally have always stayed away from a car manufacturers products, always found better quality and value for money products elsewhere.

For Black Plastic Trim - outside of the vehicle I personally use Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care, applied with a small piece of sponge allowed to almost dry and wipe/rub round with a microfiber cloth. Find this neater than any back to black spray and a lot cheaper as you use very little.

For the Tyre's - still have yet to find anything which is cheep and works well - using a Back to Black spray.

Would be good to hear other users suggestion?

Owners manual recommends use of a damp towel.

I have been using Greased Lightning Showroom Shine (from QVC in UK) for a few years now and been really impressed by it. You can even use this without washing the car first (although all the dirt goes onto the Microfibre cloths).

When the new X1 eventually arrives I intend to drive home and immediately apply a couple of coats to get the protection in place.

If BMW recommend a damp towel, I'd go with an eCloth.

http://www.ecloth.com/ecloth-perfect...ust-water.html

Just spray some water via the atomiser and wipe.

I'd personally get it sealed with a Gtecniq paint sealer and then have a coat of HD wax applied every 2-3 months.

My dealer is applying an autoglym paint sealer foc so I'm sticking with that, otherwise I would have had the Gtecniq applied from my local detailers who have washed and maintained all of my vehicles over the last 10 years

I agree with The Beast, Gtechniqs products are awsome...
Just got mine back after a full Gtecniq treatment inside out.
The way water and dirt just slides of the car is amazing

I don't have my X1 professionally treated with Gtechniqs but I am using C2 Liquid Crystal spray on it. Using all their products for inside and out.

I've been frustrated with how the widows would smear when wet. Almost as if there was a film on them. So have recently used some autoglym glass polish followed by treating all of the glass with RainX.

Water now beads and runs off the glass making it much safer driving in the rain. First time using RainX and I would definitely recommend it.

I've always used CRC 808 Silicon spray with a foam rubber applicator, like in this video.

The result is a nice appearance and seems to last quite a while.

Go to obsessedgarage.com. He also has a youtube channel.
Videos are long but great. Only for the OCD people. If you want to do a 2 hour detail, look somewhere else.

so I'm looking ahead to the pick up in a few weeks - I've dropped the 'clean and protect' dealer option at £299 but I assume that the dealer will do some sort of basic clean - though not sure.

I thought I would try and get some quotes for detailing - new car detailing specifically ... I'm getting some high prices back - most coming in at the £650 mark (waaah!!!)

I'd love to be in a position to splash the cash but not sure I can stretch to that kind of money.

What did you all do on pick up from the dealer? Wash by a pro or diy?

I tried Meguiars waterless wash and wax as I don't have access to mains (live in a high rise). Gave it a good spray the night before at a car wash to spray off all the nasty bits then it was a matter of wiping off the surface dirt the following morning. Didn't seem to leave any swirl marks at all. Obviously had to use a fair amount of microfibre cloths. But the results was better than I'd expected. Nice smooth waxed finish and smelled good too. I would recommend this product to all those with water restrictions.
