If it's an "odd rattle" It can't be right, can it?

I don't think so, no, but I've taken the service manager and a mechanic out for drives and neither of them can hear it, one of them told me it was injectors. With the bonnet up, there's two rattles, one is the injectors (absolutely fine) the other one is lower down in the engine. When pressing on, it almost sounds like a leaky manifold but doesn't sound like that at idle.

If so, mine has that and I understand it's normal. If not, curious as to what you mean. I'm South West England so probably too far to help practically. |

So an interesting morning today, we basically confirmed that both cars behave exactly the same.
Took one of their techs out in mine for a few minutes, he couldn't hear the noise on acceleration but the ticking while idling when up to temperature is very clear. Then swapped over to their demonstrator and it made the same noise under acceleration and then when up to temp, the same ticking noise when idle. While not a great sound, it's a little reassuring that both do it. I have been having fun in it today though, now I know the engine is the same as another one made a couple of months later, I was feeling much more comfortable about using the entire rev range |

I know the B48 as found in the Cooper S and 330i suffererd from crank bearing failure causing the crank to move resulting in a non returning clutch pedal. Our Cooper S seems ok so far as its a late build. At 1300 miles no strange noises or rattles as yet although the fuel consumption is shocking!! My 328i is more economical on similar journeys driven the same.

I'm in the South East, on the coast near Brighton.
The car is still under 1,500m so haven't spanked it but I shall take it out for a run in a minute and see if I can hear the noise you're reporting.

Hmm... inconclusive I'd say. Idle at startup/cold seems quite quiet, but when fully warmed up there does seem to be a faint mechanical noise which could be the injectors. On the move, booting it up to 3,000-4,000 rpm at 60mph I couldn't really detect any rattling under load. Could be I'm not listening out for the right thing
Oh dear, further testing needed Actually, since getting the car I have thought to myself that it's a lot quieter and more refined than I was expecting. Don't really get the most of the six pot soundtrack until you poke it over 3,000rpm. Maybe the MPPK will fix that
