That new car smell... How??

I asked the local stealership and no response...

How do they do it? What do they you use?

I have various Yankee Candle coconut bay gel scents around the car but they hardly last a month or so... very occasionally I can smell a bit of coconut bay..

Sometimes when I used to valet it I would leave a read diffuser inside and it did a great job of neutralizing any odors... autoglym hyper fresh does much the same.

Odors is not the issue... it is just nice to have a bit of a pleasant scent now and again.

Cheers

Its probably a combination of the various plastics and glues giving off odour, and the lack of any other unpleasant smells over the top.

After some years of use the odour from the plastics will have gone, and plenty grot and grime will have built up from n years of human occupation.

I don't know if there is a new car smell equivalent but I really like the California scents air fresheners. They say they last two months but you get waaaay longer. I put one in the boot after it stopped being so strong in the cabin and because it's a confined space it's still going after seven+ months.

Agree with Aragorn, combination of fresh plastic, glue etc giving off the new smell which will eventually wear off over time.

My way of attempting to maintain it is to NOT use any air fresheners at all, as they tend to overpower the natural odour of the car. I made this mistake on my previous car, and once I had used an air freshener and it had time to work its way into the roof lining, plastics etc, I was never getting the fresh plain new car smell back.

So far, my car has that pretty much new car smell with just cockpit premium and a microfibre used to clean the inside, and not a single air freshener used, although I cant say the previous owner never used one (61 plate 83k)

I agree with Jay, I give the car a good scrub in every groove, nook and cranny, carpet clean all carpets and use non-scented cleaners. The result, a fresh smelling car, rather than an odour covering air freshener.

Remove the seats, give the carpets a wet-vac to wash out all the dirt, if you have the spare dosh some new floor mats would do good

If you're cars been smoked in then it'd be a idea to get the roof lining professionally done too, along with the seats if they're cloth or Alcantara, some good leather cleaner on leather seats will give a nice smell

I use Autoglym Interior Shampoo which has a pretty nice clean smell to it

I always thought *Gliptone* leather cleaner/feed was credited with making a car smell like new again.

Not used it in the M3 yet, but it did in the 335, it also makes the two sofas smell like new BMW's when the other half uses it on them.

'Autoglym Autofresh' spray is pretty good.
Just spray it onto the carpets, headlining and underneath the mats every few weeks.

It's pretty strong so I just do it when I've arrived home on a night then make sure I wont be in the car until the following day so I'm not gassed out lol.

Also heard good reports from a similar one from 'Autosmart'.

I've got a few ideas to try out. I managed to get hold of my old favourite autoglym hyper fresh clean linen. They have stopped making this! Very few left online.

That and this weekend. I am going to get out a few soft brushes and autoglym interior shampoo to give it a thorough clean.

For old time sake I am going to use a Wurth air con bomb too.

Cheers for the replies.
