Michelin Pilot Super Sport (Upgraded)

I finally upgraded all four tires to MPSS from the factory runflats. I got 20k miles out of the rears and they wore down to the cords on the inner walls. The fronts had about 6/32's left. So I decided to replace the rears and get to the fronts a little later down the road. After a week like that the car just didn't feel right. The noise from the fronts just sounded louder for some reason so I went in today and got the fronts done too.

The difference is night and day. Much more compliant ride and quieter to boot. Have not had a chance to really test the handling yet but so far i am pleased with the purchase.

RFT doesn't make sense from a cost standpoint. It's kinda interesting how a lot of car mfgs now do NOT put RFTs on and do NOT have a jack. Nice!

Still haven't put my PSS's on...running the RE050A's into the ground...same thing, fronts have decent amount, rears are nearly to the wear indicators...

RFTs and there so they can save on the spare wheel cost as well as meet emission standards by shedding weight. Kinda of interesting as AAA put out an article the other day to call Manufacturers to stop putting RFTs with no spares.

But I agree with you about the no jack part. Seems like a pretty shitty thing to do.

Compare to the stock Continental run flats that I got the car with, the Michelin PSS tires are magnitudes better.

Best money I spent on the car this year!

Been running MPSS tires for about 2 years.

Have only put around 10k miles on them. The E90 is a 4th car (an FJ Cruiser is my daily driver) and I only drive it when I want a fancy looking ride, want go really fast and/or need to carry more than 2 people.

Huge change for the better from the RFTs. Just added an emergency spare w/jack and lift pucks for emergencies. Don't use the truck to carry much so the space the spare takes up is not an issue for me.

So I just got done taking a road trip from Knoxville to Atlanta and what sticks out the most is that the ride is less jarring when you hit bumps and bridge expansions. With the Bridgestones bumps would hit so hard that I thought something was going to break. The mpss give the car an almost luxurious ride.

Another thing that I noticed is how much meatier they look in the wheel well. I'm sure this adds to the compliance.

I have pretty much full tread on my runflats that came with my CPO. I still just want to ditch them now and get PSSs...

I'm about 2 months away from getting a set of MPSS to replace runflats as well (Wife says not till after Christmas). Can't wait b/c the Bridgestones are just terrible at this point. Did you order PSS's online or buy local?

I got them from Discount Tire for a decent price. I've purchased online before for my other car and it was a hassle trying to find someone to install them.

The Pilot Super Sports make the car ride better and handle better. I've been a convert for 15 years. The nicest thing about the 3 series is that I can put all four PSS on for just a little more than one PSS tire on the M5.

Lots of car companies no longer put a spare tire in the car, and still don't put the crappy run flats on. Compressor and a can of goop in the trunk.

except that RFTs are way heavier than a regular tire, and that likely evens out the fuel economy from having a 50mph doughnut spare & cheap, barely functional jack. It probably does save a bit in production costs and they have to put all those computers somewhere (under the trunk of my 330i looks like a freaking space ship).

It doesn't help that a lot of people are just afraid of unscrewing 5 bolts and changing a tire by themselves...

doesn't help if you have a huge hole in the tire or sidewall damage. RFTs and fix-a-flat are not replacements for a spare tire.

In my 15 years as a tech, I have only seen 1 or 2 punctures that could not have been fixed with a sealant and compressor. It is very, very rare. Almost every single sidewall damaged tire I have seen, is from people ignoring the low pressure light, and continuing to drive on a flat tire.

If the light comes on, check the pressure immediately and take appropriate action. Will be fine.

My last 4 cars have no spare, and regular tires. Not too worried.

it's not that rare. It's happened to me personally at least 3 times.

Last time, I ran over part of a bungie chord that made a hole way too big for fix a flat to do anything. Ended up having to replace the tire.

Having a spare tire is a simple, effective solution. RFTs are stupid.

You just may be lucky that Santa leaves you a set under the tree for Christmas. You gotta believe.

I just couldn't replace my run flats until the tread was gone and I am finally there.

Ordering mine and having them installed in a few weeks, can't wait.

Speaking of tires...

1. Yes, run flats are horrible, especially if you are picky about the feel/handling of your ride.
2. Just tried the new continentals DWS06 in a 275/19 dimension, and have to say that I am really impressed with them so far. I understand that the new "06" model went through several upgrades from the predecessor, DWS, including stiffer sidewalls. So if you want to try something else you might check that one out, and it comes with a 50k "warranty", and better than nothing which is what I have been used to.[IMG][/IMG]

And here are some pictures of the DWS06 I am running, and likely will put on the BMW next, same dimension, minus the staggered will likely take the 245/35 up front.
