BMW best system is individual audio followed by harmon kardon logic 7 - you can tell you have this if you have a center speaker in the dash and speakers in the rear doors. the individual audio systems have radial spokes visible in the door speaker grills and often the speakers are orangish in color. the logic 7 speakers are aluminum in color.

next best is hifi, this system is indicated by tweeters in the front door sail panels, but no dash speaker and no speakers in the rear doors.

worst is the stereo system, this system will not even have tweeters in the front doors.

There are 4 systems

Base: No amp, no tweeters, no center speaker

Hifi: 6 channel amp and front tweeters but no center channel. (Easiest to upgrade)

Logic 7: 9 Channel amp. Has front tweeters, rear door speakers, and a center speaker. Fiber optic signal wires makes it more difficult to upgrade.

individual audio: M3 premium sound system similar to logic 7 with a different amp and speakers.

Apparently they do different things in different

Apparently they do different things in different countrys
so I would verify things. There was one guy on here that
only had one underseat speaker in your territory.
We don't get the business radio or nav here in the states.
(at least in the e9x)

Easiest to upgrade to aftermarket speakers/amps? Or to the next oem step - Logic 7?

hifi easiest to upgrade to aftermarket amp, which is usually what is required to make aftermarket speakers sound good. just need an amp that can accept balanced inputs. popular ones include: JL audio, alpine, ARC audio etc.

Base audio
Option 676 - Hi-Fi
Option 677 - pre-LCI Logic7; Option 688 - LCI harmon/kardon
Option 752 - Individual High End Audio

Option 676 HiFi is easiest to upgrade to aftermarket components because it uses regular speaker preamp outputs from the head unit with wiring to the amp in the trunk.

The Logic7 and up systems use a fiber optic connection via the MOST bus to transport audio from the head unit to the amp, so upgrading to an aftermarket amp requires more work and wiring.
