Engine Management Light Issues

As per another thread I've been having issues with a random EML light.

A couple of times this week it has come on after driving about 1/2 mile, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

I bought a code reader and have just plugged it in, no codes recorded. I'm wondering if this is because there are no codes to read or the reader isn't picking them up (it seems to work in all other aspects).

I'm noticing no loss in power, the car runs smooth, the car runs fine.

Do I need to take this in to a BMW dealer/independent and get them to plug it in for diagnostics?

TIA.

Just for clarification, that's the yellow half engine light, the engine management light.
