Uh oh, what did I break...

So yesterday I went out and attempted to show my buddy how flat foot shifting works with the procede. After my second time flat foot shifting my car suddenly felt like it lost all of its power, almost as if you were driving with the E-brake still on. Pulled up to a light and when I put the car in neutral and let the clutch out an awful noise was coming under the car, a very loud rattle. If i pushed the clutch in, the noise went away. I immediately pulled into the nearest parking lot and shut the car off and started inspecting under the hood and under the car, nothing seemed out of the ordinary but you can't see too much without a lift. No warning lights ever came on, temps were fine, etc. I started the car back up and noise was gone, power was there, and everything seemed fine... Any ideas on what happened? I assume it was clutch/transmission related since the noise only occurred with the clutch pedal let out. Thanks in advance.

Car was probably in limp mode and running on 3 cyl. Shutting the car off and restarting did a reset. Did you read codes? Probably a misfire.

No lights appeared on the dash, so there were no codes to read. I have an open flash tablet, no malfunction codes pop up when I plug it in. Unless there are other codes I'm not aware of?

it has a single mass flywheel and aftermarket clutch according to the previous owner, and the car drives absolutely fine after turning it off and back on... I'm stumped lol if the car went into limp mode, should a light have appeared on the dash?

From what you described it sounds like you've rooted the clutch release bearing. Some noise is actually normal (I get a little rattling noise from mine when the car is hot). Its a floating release bearing so some noise is normal.

Does it still rattle when the car is cold?

If its really loud then you'll need to drop the transmission and change it out. Probably throw in a new clutch in there since you have everything apart.

It has clutch chatter from being an aftermarket heavy duty clutch in the first place, but this was not normal at all. It was very loud, i thought it was rod knock or something at first. After restarting the car all symptoms went away and it runs great, no knocking noise.

I would say it was mechanical considering there were no lights and the clutch engagement effected the noise.

I would say it had something to do with the pilot or throw out bearing.

If the vehicle is operating as normal I wouldn't put too much concern to it.

Car went to limp mode. Mine do the same.

Right in between 2nd and 3rd the car acts stupid as if its confused and doesnt WOT, almost as if it wants to but something is preventing it then it just falls on its face then starts stuttering... I even have MHD flash and it seems the computer just wont allow you to shift fast.

Yup, i was told get use to it from 2 previous 335i enthusiasts... Sucks you cant shift fast in the 6mt, almost as if you can shift faster than the computer can register... Must be made by grannies lmao. Upgrade your fuel pump while you're at it

I have no problems shifting my car fast. I'd say it's user error.

If the car is back to normal now it was probably a limp mode which reset itself when you turned it on / off like mentioned above by Wedge.

There was actually 2 things that happened here.

1 you likely misfired, put the car into limp mode and turning it off and back on is the only fix for that outside of just clearing the codes.

The other is the clutch/trans related issue. I don't know exactly what happened though.

Well whats weird is that no codes appeared on the dash, I figured a check engine light would appear if it was in limp mode. I have been driving it for the last few days and everything still appears to be fine, but I haven't attempted to WOT from 2nd to 3rd again since, makes me nervous lol but I'm going to try the next opportunity i have and see what happens. I think something mechanical happened as well. Lets just hope it doesn't come back.

Usually it needs to see the problem 3 times before the CEL illuminates, depending.

Misfire limp mode is extremely common on this car and since you were playing with NLS it's no surprise either.

Can I ask why you are still using procede in 2015? Are those even still sold?

Ive only had the car for a month, the previous owner installed the procede a few years ago. I contemplated taking it out and switching to a JB4 and MHD, or even a cobb but as the saying goes "if it aint broke, don't fix it". It has FBO, procede rev3, open flash tablet, flex fuel sensor, and an inline flex fuel pump on an e50 wedge tune running about 430whp/490wtq... Ripping all of that out and switching to another piggyback to probably see similar power levels just doesn't seem that appealing. Maybe later down the road I will switch but as of now I would rather save the money for maintenance/repairs when needed.

OP i wouldn't worry unless something again happens going WOT
