Exhaust Comparison Video: Single Turbo vs Hybrid Turbos

Gentlemen,

I will be taking care of my friends car while he is abroad this winter. It has already sat for a couple weeks so yesterday I took it out for a spin to get the fluids moving and revel in how awesome it is to drive stick (can't wait for my swap). After the car was warm I took the opportunity to capture some video of the exhaust system.

This is an interesting comparison since both cars run custom, mandrel-bent, tig welded, single 3" exhaust systems. There are some slight differences but essentially it is an apples-to-apples comparison highlighting A) the sound differences of a single turbo vs hybrid turbos and B) how great N54s sound with well built single-pipe systems. With the E90's valve open the only differences between the systems is the E90 has a longer merge collector and the E61 has a y-pipe to split the tips. Other than that they are nearly identical.

I think I'm digging the Hexon's a bit more! Perfect because that's the route I plan to take!

The turbo howl off-idle is pretty intoxicating.

E90 is suffering from a wastegate or solenoid issue, boost is only hitting about 12psi. After that is resolved it will be time for a stg3 LPFP and PI to really unlock the potential.

My E61 is around 550awhp at 22/23psi (E35)

With the permission of Jay of FHF I ripped the Instagram video he posted of my friend's E90 when he still had RBs. Unfortunately this is the only video left in existence since Jay deleted the original and once the car was shipped back to CA it immediately received the FFTEC kit.

As you can hear once the valve is opened the RBs really sing just like my Hexons, further demonstrating how awesome these custom single 3" systems sound.

What causes the turbos to stay spooling and so loud with your setup versus a traditional exhaust?

Great numbers, about maxing out a stock torque converter and transfer case, I think a set of hybrid twins are in my future!

The TC, AT, and output shafts are under some added stress with the new power and torque, especially considering my wagon is 4,600lbs when I drive it. I do my best to drive smoothly and I never launch. Someone needs to step up and build a beefy front end for these xi cars. High HP guys keep sidestepping the issue and go to RWD which is counter intuitive as now they just struggle putting 600+rwhp and rwtq through the rear tires.

Both systems are essentially straight piped so that is a big part of it. Also I think the larger diameter piping helps too.

An image I borrowed from the internet of the Vibrant resonator.
