335is BMW PE

I have a 335is which I'm sure comes equipped with the BMW PE exhaust, but I want it to be louder but still keep the sound.

Can I achieve that with a muffler/secondary cat delete?

Any tips?

I don't want to have rasp, but I wish to have a louder exhaust at lower rpms as well.

The 335is doesn't come equipped with the performance exhaust in stock form. If you want more noise without rasp, I would suggest getting catless Downpipes. If that's still not loud enough, do the secondary cat deletes.

Catless downpipes with stock exhaust is a great combination for sound and performance.

The 335is exhaust is actually in between the stock 335i and the PE. And pairing catless DPs with the 335is exhaust doesn't give you just noise without rasp, it actually gives you a solid case of Honda fart cannon rice rasp between 4500 and 5500 RPM. Ask me how I know.

That can ostensibly be cured with a pair of resonators, which are currently headed my way.

I ran catless dp's with the PE and personally didn't think it was too bad. But yeah, putting in some resonators in place of the secondary cats would probably help a lot with drone.

+1

I always hear catless on our is exhaust sucks, but with PE it seems to sound nice for everyone...though I like the is exhaust > PE.

OP do the golf tee mod..just unplug actuator. I decided to go with catted dp and hoping that will keep the rice out...will be posting when installed.

You're in CA, so I would personally just add the BMW PE since downpipes can be a pain to pass emissions with. I haven't personally dealt with this, but some on here have had issues with smog and the dp fix. Don't unplug the actuator, I did this for a while and it does indeed sound better, but there is drone present on the freeway which was rather annoying. The BMW PE has no drone and only a little rasp in my personal opinion, and it will get people's attention if you drive it hard.

What type of resonators would you recommend?

Vibrant 1792's seem to be the go to resonators. I might go this route myself. Waiting on JasW to get his on and get a opinion.

I actually ordered the Vibrant 1790s. (Should be here tomorrow, though I won't be able to get to the exhaust shop until next week.) People have gone with either -- I opted for the 1790s because at 2.25" they're supposed to be the same size as the stock piping, while the 1792s are 2.5". Then someone today said on another thread here that the stock piping is really 2.36", or 3mm larger than the 1790s. Whatever. I'm sure either would be fine. I just want to lose the rasp, which if you're driving a vert, is impossible to ignore, as it is when the top is up and the windows are closed. Gurgling, popping, and loud, low grumbling are great, but that metallic buzz saw farting -- with an almost trumpet-like effect when you engage the clutch on the MT at the top of the rev -- is embarassing on such an otherwise classy car. Cold start is over the top, too.

The key issue seems to be placement, and whether to swap out your secondary cats or have them artfully positioned elsewhere, either just after the x-pipe or before somewhere in the mid-pipe. I'll find out next week.

Ive seen some 335is with the vibrant resonators in place of the 2 mufflers. What type of sound would that give? Any ideas?

This is what I have learned:

The IS exhaust stock without DPs sounds great with or without golf tee mod.
The IS exhaust with DPs sounds horrible past 4k rpms, super raspy.
The Performance exhaust without DPs sounds too quiet and I would not recommend this on a IS, better to stick with stock exhaust if no DPs.
The Performance exhaust with DPs sounds like PURE SEX! This is what I am currently running.

I've also tried the AE Dual tip catback exhaust on the IS and although it was not bad, I still didn't like it.

Different Vibrant resonators -- those are the Vibrant 1141, more muffler-like. Here are sound clips and pics of someone with an E90 who swapped out the secondary cats for the Vibrant 1792s and the mufflers for the Vibrant 1141s: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...5#post14388085. Doesn't sound worth it to me to also swap out the mufflers.

Note the guy in the post below that one (which also has sound clips) just swapped out the secondary cats on his E92 Xdrive for the Vibrant 1790s. That actually sounds pretty good.

Of course, neither of these have the 335is exhaust, so I have no idea whether the exhaust will sound like that with the resonators. If I had to do it all over again, I might have just gotten the ar design catless DPs with the built in resonators, but they are almost $500 more.

EDIT: I just realized you're in Cali -- you might want to just get the c-PE high-flow catted DPs. You'll get no rasp, you'll pass emissions, and you only lose about 5hp vs. the catless (i.e., you'll gain 5hp less than you otherwise would with the catless). Here's a mini-review of the c-PE catted DPs on the 335is.

Start with VRSF catless downpipes. If you still want louder add the performance exhaust
