Thumbs up Feeler: Custom Twin Oil Cooler

Background: I have an early build 335i with no oil cooler and during the summer or any hot day I've notice how high my temps go. So I figured it's time to get the oem oil cooler setup. Spending a couple hours sourcing parts, I realized going twin aftermarket was cheaper and more reliable.

I really don't want to fork out over $1300 for an ER Competition oil cooler yet alone the $700 for their basic setup, so I've started sourcing my own parts. With the build I'll be using oem filter housing and thermostat.

I've found pretty much everything they are offering except for a mounting bracket and shield. So far under $250 spent on parts

I'll be fabricating my own mounts soon and fitting everything on my car.

I currently have a broken arm right now so this build will be slow. Not sure if anyone has done this yet as I'm too lazy to search.

Once everything is finalized I'll provide a list of parts and where to get them. I'll also provide blueprints for the mount or sell them.

Please don't bash my thoughts only kind words or GTFO.

Interested. How are you planning on tapping into the stock non-oil cooler Engine filter housing? I thought you had to get a replacement oil cooler equipped oil filter housing.

Definitely interested, picked up an oil cooler filter housing to slap on my x-drive. Need a reasonably priced kit! If you get this up before next spring you have my money!

I sourced a set of used oem oil filter housing and thermostat for the oem oil cooler setup to use. Lines and cooler will be all aftermarket parts.

Parts ordered and waiting. As mentioned in the first post I have a broken arm at the moment so this project will take a very long time, unless there's a miracle and my arm heals perfectly tomorrow.

My main focus right now is getting the coolers and making a solid mounting bracket. Everything else is straightforward and bolt-on.

Right on man, I'm doing the same thing! Using the Motiv plate that came with my 750 kit and gonna get some a/n lines made and run a twin loop system with Mishimoto universal coolers. Just not sure what size yet lol. Good luck with the build man!!!

Parts have slowly arrived. Had some issues with supplier and had to reorder some parts. Waiting for a new cooler so I can start fabricating brackets.

Will be doing 2 options. 1. Oem style behind the fog lights and 2. Mounted in front of radiator.

Very good idea, OP. My car also didn't come with an oil cooler. I sourced an OEM oil filter housing with thermostat for very cheap. I was going to go with OEM lines and cooler as well, but the lines are so expensive, even used ones. So I may be going aftermarket as well.

Why do you want to cool your oil so much? Do you track the car?

You sound like you are mechanically inclined. I think a dual oil cooler set up is going to be way to much for the car, our cars operate at certain operating temperatures, I under stand no oil cooler isn't enough but dual is probably gonna be over kill and think its gonna cool the oil to much making it harder on bearings and other components that require the more viscous oil.

Single granted it's been cool but I can't get mine over 240 with no cooler up here in the northeast but with the additional power coming soon I will upgrade to a thermostat controlled single cooler in the spring.
