A Performance or A Safety Feature?

Would an insurance company consider a Limited Slip Differential to be a performance enhancement or a safety enhancement? I think an argument could be raised for either or both. Would adding an aftermarket LSD increase a premium?

My question is: Would the insurance company know or even care? I don't think they will, and there shouldn't be any increase in your premium.

It's a question of coverage. If you want your LSD replaced when your car is totalled out you need to add it to your policy. Allstate refuses coverage (at least in IL) of any "performance enhancing" modifications right off the bat.

why? It improves traction. I have considered getting one to improve my car's safety for winter conditions.

well you might be able to convince your insurance company but i am sure it'll take a lot of trouble... you might have to show them some sort of "proof" that they improve safety... i am not sure how you will do that.

yes to more traction, but it makes the car a little more difficult to handle at the limit.
