engine gunk

soo i got a 328xi as a hand me down from my parents ( was my sisters ). It was not running and its my first car i got it running after changing valve cover and catalytic converters. i spent around 2k$ getting it running going to register it tomorrow but the mechanic said my sister never did an oil change on it so the engine has allot of gunk in it. Any idea how to clean it out? car has 90k miles just got an oil change.

Wait... WHAT?

90k without an oil change?

Sir, tell your sister to go buy a lottery ticket.
----------
If there is a lot of gunk you might need to physically remove some parts and clean them out (oil pan, engine cover, breather hoses, etc.). And then use engine cleaners (be careful with these as they can mess up a lot of things too).

But keep in mind, this job might be better handled by professionals.

Also, search google for engine gunk cleaning, etc.. Gunk is same in any car - not bmw specific.

Standard BMW recommended oil change interval (using their oil) for these vehicles is about 15,000 miles.

If you do not suspect it is a lot of sludge, then simple engine flush might work. You might need to do it several times. Just be mindful as that stuff can damage seals etc.

That will also give us a better idea of what you are up against. It might be simply a case of a good flush (not so keen on aggressive engine cleaners), but maybe the ATF oil method (usually a quart of the oil drained and then topped up with ATF, then run the car gently for a few days), or a more costly strip down. But either way it's going to be a slow process.

At bavauto, you can buy a Liqui Moly Engine renewal kit(Part # LMERK. That should clean it out.

If the oil was changed once or twice then it is safe to say he's fucked. A flush won't remove that level of gunk.. Like the video shows; get a good mechanic and bring a wad of cash if you want this done right.

Yep, that's why some pics would be helpful. Chances are it's too late for a flush of any sort.

I feel like there should be something similar to child services for cars and if you let it get into that sort of disrepair, as in the video, someone should just come take it from you. lol

Just boggles my mind how someone can be that neglectful of their car. I'm sure OP's sister had another car just handed to her and she's in the process of fucking it up as we speak..

Some people are just dumb. My little brother totaled 3 cars before he turned 17. First one he buried a maple tree between the headlights on the first day he could legally drive, 2nd car was used to relocate the rear axle of another car into the rear seat. On the 3rd car, he decided oil was optional... he walked a lot after that.

It is amazing how some people that seem to "appear" to be car people simply by the kind of cars they own are actually clueless, I mean hopeless! And their cars bare the brunt of this hopelessness, then ultimately the next owner sits with the problems. I must say that to a certain extent I do blame the auto industry for this - pretty much all cars sold these days have some or other service/maintenance plan included in the deal, and as such people are not really all that involved in checking the basics as required. They also usually don't read the car's owners manual, so even if they see a warning light, who's to say they know what it means. Years ago I worked for one of these types of people, and was asked to check something before taking his car in for a service - I released the bonnet latch and instead of it popping up as expected, it sort of reluctantly stayed down. I was able to lift it enough so that I could release the bonnet catch to open it. It was apparent then that this engine bay got very very little attention - the bonnet hinges were very much rusted tight from simply not being opened on any sort of regular basis. And this was not a particularly old car, just used as a means to get from point A to B. He was also the sort of person that I reckon would have to call road-side assist to change a flat tyre...

+1 the other difficulty is that manufactures lead buyers to believe that they can go with long service intervals. This process is of course designed to take you up to the warranty expiry date and when you hit 60,000 miles or whatever it is all of a sudden there are things that need to be maintained that were not part of the previous schedule.

Most engine flushes are designed to keep an already clean engine clean. In your case it is perhaps not worth the risk of using a cleaner or flush. Please remove what you can and take a look inside as it most probably needs a physical clean. This is also a good opportunity to check out the other internals as they may or may not have suffered due to the neglect.
