Hi from new member
Hi all,
New member here, recently got myself a nice 2nd hand example of a 335d xdrive saloon, trading in a 330d xdrive touring. Always wanted the 335d engine but was out of reach previously until now. Looking forward to getting involved in the forum with the UK members. 63 plate with 27k miles, spec includes: Sapphire black metallic, Adaptive suspension, HUD, reverse camera, boot spoiler, heated seats, pro nav, Harmon kardon, sport mats, M3 style black grilles, adaptive xenon headlights with high beam assist, M brake package, auto fold mirrors, Internet+apps, service pack, M Performance pedals. I've got a Spider Performance tuning box so happy to answer any questions about that, or 330d vs 335d experiences. Thanks! Joe |

Welcome to the forum Joe. From your spec list, affinity with big diesels, and aftermarket tuning you're in good company here

Howdy!
I'm going to be the first to say it. ACS springs. Now that's out of the way, enjoy your new steed!

Thanks guys! Haha yes ACS springs next on the list for sure. Only problem is I've got a 6 month old baby which is draining most of my money at the moment....
The springs themselves aren't too expensive but I've no idea how much it costs to get them fitted... |

I think you're looking sub £600 these days. Well worth the investment too. Sounds like a lovely car in the best colour, enjoy. Mark

You will notice a definite difference in how the two cars deliver their power even though on paper they are not that far apart. Enjoy it Joe and welcome to the site. Robert

Actually, I'd be interested in hearing how you feel the saloon is over the tourer?
The mags always say they handle the same but I'm not sure. And welcome to the forum... where you really either need to have a tourer, or a 6 pot diesel to be in the cool club!

Thanks for the welcome guys.
To be honest I thought I would be able to feel a slight difference in dynamics due to less weight in the saloon but I would struggle to tell the difference at anything below 8/10ths between them. Not sure if that's because the handling is still limited by the stock springs (I am going to swap to ACS soon ), or whether I am just not as perceptive a driver as some. But certainly not a big difference AT ALL. One big difference I have noticed is that BMW must be quoting the boot size in the tourer below headrest height, as there's no way its only bigger by 25 litres if you take into account the space up to the roof, real benefit of the tourer was to be able to stuff the boot to high heaven for weekend trips, which having a baby is very important. The boot in the F30 is still fine for what I need, but just bit of a shock tbh. Also after changing the springs going to swap to non RF tyres which I'm sure will affect the car's behaviour. Thoughts on 335d vs 330d - was expecting 335d to feel torquier but actually it doesnt it has almost an NA feel, what I really noticed was the top end pull from 4-4.5k in the 335. Both engines are fabulous though. |

Ok maybe I'm not missing out on anything after all. Surprised to hear that you swapped out of a tourer when I heard you had a baby! And yes you have all the extra space above the load cover that's not included in the boot volume figures.
The 335d engine, in combination with that 8 speed box really gives a very linear feel to the acceleration- quite different to my old remapped E90 330d. It really is deceptively quick as it doesn't have the same shorter lived torque surge as the single turbo engines, it's a longer one so has a different character.

To be honest the main factor was that I tend to lease my cars on PCP or lease purchase and managed to get this one 5.8% apr used which is pretty incredible. If I could choose between F31 and F30 I think the former would be more future proof if I have a second kid, but for now with just 1 I've realised the saloon is plenty big enough - the amount of times I actually need the full capacity of the boot is not often at all, just my situation, but can imagine for some it's critical.
Yeah absolutely agree with you on the engine feel - to be honest I've been surprised to see from dyno charts (recent forum rolling road day etc) that the 335d starts to drop off in power after 4k, as it really doesn't feel like that at all. In fact, it makes you want to rev all the way out to 5 and doesn't feel like acceleration suffers for it......strange |

Welcome to the forum Joe - Looks a great spec car you have. Hope you like the engine upgrade - must have cost you a few quid to make the change!
I was tempted by the 335d engine, but didn't want the x-drive. Can you comment on the cabin noise of the saloon - do you think it's quieter than the tourer? |

Hi mate thanks! Obviously I was left slightly out of pocket but got a great partex and very low apr on the new one so saving about 60 quid in dead interest per month.
To be honest I don't think the tourer is noisier, the only thing I used to occasionally notice was a bit of a noise from the roller blind that went across top of the boot in the tourer when I would go over bumps at speed etc, but nothing apart from that. I think xdrive gets a bit of unfair bashing tbh - I previously had a remapped c350 cdi rwd and couldn't wait to get into something which could put the torque down easily in anything other than dry conditions. However, from experience the transmission losses in xdrive plus the extra weight (specifically on the 330d) do make the car a bit slower on the move. |
