Recalls because of snowstorm!

Check with your dealer's people!

Brutal. Those cars were sitting there for weeks. I can understand water and ice, but hard to understand salt damage. I'm guessing they drive them off the boat through pools of salty water and then let them sit there.

I was advised today by my dealer that my 550 that came in on the same ship is being replaced by BMW. They are going to inspect it to make sure I can use it until the new one comes in, but it will be replaced completely. No cost to me.

Are they replacing the parts or the car completely?

I am surprised by this as it only says to replace parts in the recall. But good on BMW for doing the right thing.

everyone who was stuck at halifax port contact BMW NA.

they will tell you if your on the recall list or not.

the vehicles will be taken back by BMW, so you will have to build another car etc.

I work for an Automotive group that owns a BMW store. A few of our cars were effected, even the car the owner is currently driving, 2015 M5. Sounds like BMW is handling things properly. Completely replacing the cars for the customers.

I kinda wish my M3 was part of this. Would have had a 2015, then gotten a 2016 LCI. That's the best of both worlds Id say

Do you have any idea how they are managing mods. My car was affected...its also modded. Trying to dig for some info from the dealer and BMW canada but finding it a little tricky.

If they're completely replacing the car, why not just go back to stock and hand it over? Then put the mods back when the replacement arrives. Unless of course you sold off some of the original parts, then you have an issue.

It's a real shame to have to give back an individual car though, particularly in light of the wait times. Would you change it up at all? Are they allowing that? Maybe it's an opportunity for a fresh look without the financial penalty.

Has anyone already completed the 'replacement' car with the dealer yet ? Like paper signed, replacement car chosen and waiting for confirmation of production and delivery time.

Interested in this situation and anything I should be aware of when talking to the dealer.

my car has gone back to the dealer.

i have a new order starting production next week. got lucky with September allocation

im in a loaner until my new vehicle arrives.

no paperwork has been done as of yet, i would assume it will only be done once the new car arrives.

how come you are in a loaner ?

once you ordered the car, your current car has to be turned in right away ? It would be better if you just keep on driving your current car and when the new replacement comes in, you just swap car at that time ? Unless, bmw canada wants to ensure the car is safe and sound and want to minimize the chance of the car being in an accident.

your dealer will give you the option.

i opted to surrender the vehicle back to the dealer.

and wait for the new to arrive, which is why they put me in a loaner at their cost.

I know it's not really any of our business but what will happen to these bought back vehicles? Scrapped / Parted Out? Or repaired and put into demo fleets / resold as CPO?

If the so called damage was because the car sat around in pools of melted snow and salt, isn't that technically "flood damage"?

someone said bmw canada will file for insurance claim for these vehicles, therefore, if they will become the property of the insurance company and it's up to them to decide. I am guessing they will be sold to wholesaler or auction off.

I don't see there's any chance that they will sell the car to a 2nd owner. They won't be recalling cars and giving brand new replacement if the problem is minor.

I heard they have to destroy all of them because they're not allowed to resell them.

I work for BMW as a Tech. This Recall has effected alot of the cars. The water and Ice was just not the main reason combined with the salt but there were also cases involving mold inside the cars. Also with the Temperatures changing during the storm from +3 to -20C water was also ingesting into the EPS modules and causing steering faults..some right away some not until after being driven for a little while.

As far as I heard from my shop Foreman he said the Cars will be shipped back to germany for inspection. Any parts needing replaced will be replaced and the vehicles will be sold in DUBAI for Off-highway use due to alot of cars there are sold as off-highway vehicles already.

I am happy to see BMW being pro-active about this problem, the word i heard is VW uses the same port and has witnessed the same problem but no major recall has been made yet but they are seeing large amounts of problems with some of their cars already.
