535D Record Breaker...DMS

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/videos/...d_breaker.html

Same Map as i run.. i rekon the Coupe 3er will have a higher top speed, due to its more aerodynamic shape and weight advantage.

Aerodynamics yes Carlos, weight no, it only effects how quick your top speed is attained.

If you look at this rather informative site they give figures for the drag coefficient of each: http://www.bmw.co.uk

Dont think there will be a huge amount of difference between the 2. Obviously the coupe will be a little faster. To be honest I'd be way too scared to take a car that fast on a track and attempt to find its top end.

dont know thought u cud tell me that. youre up to speed on these things! ive registered on the site but cant seem to find the booking/register to participate....there seem to be much 'lesser' powerful cars running, i thought at first it would be a lot of exotics similar to GTboard/M5/M6board organised events.

surely theirs a large fee to do this thinking about the site its held on

Safest place to do it. Beats the A26 from Rheims to Calais late on a Monday evening.

There is actually not as much difference in weight between the 535d and 335d as you would expect - because the 5'er uses so much aluminium.

Anyway ... the fastest STOCK BMW diesel is the older model 218bhp e60 530d.

It doesn't have a limiter, but can reach 157mph

There may well be something in the 5 series aerodynamics as well as cars with longer bootlids generally have the lowest CDs, assuming the front end is tidy.

535d msport saloon - 1735kg / 0.27 cd

335d msport coupe - 1645kg / 0.30 cd

Difference in weight is equivalent to having me as a passenger

Presumably max speed will also be limited by gearing?

That would explain why they chose the 5 for the attempt then.

With the 335d geared at about 40MPH/1000RPM, 174 MPH would equal 4350RPM, which compares well with the standard engines max output which is attained at 4400RPM. Assuming the 535d is similarly geared (it might actually be slightly lower geared?) and the DMS map pushes the output up a couple of hundred RPM, it may well be that the aerodynamics were the limiting factor.

All speculation though without knowing the 535ds gearing and the revs at which the DMS map produces its max power. All good fun.

Regards

Chris
