What do model numbers mean anymore

OK, so for us the 335i was not a 3.5 litre, but a 3 litre twin turbo. Fair enough. The TT really made up for the 500CC but now the 340i is a 3 litre single turbo car. 322BHP

What is with that?

I was having a similar conversation with a colleague as he couldn't understand which engine was in which model.

They will use multiple engines in multiple models as it's cheaper to use like parts amongst them (hence 3L in 325i, 330i and 335i)

Why do people assume the two digits after the series mean engine size?

Even back in the 90's that wasn't strictly the case. The 3xx is generally a performance indicator above anything else.

I think it hinders things when selling 2nd hand, not everyone researches what they want to buy so think "oh I want the 330D" not knowing a 325D with a reamp is almost the same car, equally when selling my 335i even car garages priced it up compared to a 330i not knowing the difference.

The whole 1 Series 116/118/120 D range is based on the same engine but ppl really don't know it's all the same engine capacity.

It's an indicator of performance, and nothing else.

The new 340i should be quicker than the 335i it is replacing.

True,
the 335i looks to have 302BHP and the 340i 322BHP

but then you get efficient dynamics models. Same model number, less power:

320i 2012- N20B20 184 PS (135 kW; 181 hp)@5000 270 N·m (199 lb·ft)@1250-4500

320i
EfficientDynamics Edition 2012- N13B16 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp)@4800 250 N·m (184 lb·ft)@1500

Still find it funny that the 335d is the fastest in the range, even with the new 340i...
Bit weak really.

Shame the 335d dosent get the twin exit exhaust like it use to.
But I guess that adds to the sleeper apeal.

Well to me the now twin scroll 335i etc and the twin turbo M3, M4 really does show that the N54 335i was too good.

What's really got me stumped aside from the 340i thing, is the fact they bought out the 4 series as it was going to be exclusivley the 2 door coupe, with the 3 series being exclusively the 4 door.

Yet There is now a 4 series GT....which has 4 doors?

Daftness.
