ECO PRO TEST Alnwick to Newcastle 58.4 mpg
I think the A1 from Alnwick Garden to my home is the most perfect condition for getting optimum mpg figures. 1/2 mile from A1 at Alnwick and to my home in Newcastle, another 1 mile of no traffic after 34 miles of dual carriageway at 55-60 mph without stops or appreciable slowing down on a Saturday afternoon
So today I went to Alnwick in comfort mode at 53.4 mpg. On return I drove at 55-60 mph, rev counter 1100 to 1400 throughout - no stopping and lots of space to not get embarrassed by getting in the way of racers in Kia Picantos! ECO PRO mode all the way and temperature outside 19 degrees C. 335D achieved 58.4 mpg so I deduce that ECO PRO works, average speed 51.4 mph on journey computer. Downers - I nearly fell asleep twice on the way back and the air conditioning ceased to function which might have been the cause. I believe ECO PRO does dull the cold air intake as well as the throttle. So a very economical journey totally boring and uncomfortable too. Still a great car that can do that as well as 4.9 secs 0-62. Thanks BMW but I'll stick to comfort mode in future. |

Haha it's good to try this sort of thing once to see what it can do ..... But you wouldn't want to make a habit of it!

I think we have all tried it to convince ourselves or our spouse that we drive an economical diesel. The reality is I suspect few of us make a habit of using it. Lol.
I think the air con stops working as it uses engine power to run it but you can go in and adjust the economy pro settings and restrict what it can do. |

You have not taken into account downhill and uphill.
Do the same journey both ways in the same mode. I think you will find it to be about the same. What eco pro does can be achieved in comfort. It's all about how you control your right foot. |

Just done the same. Travelled down to Dorset this morning with a mix of town, country and motorways and used eco pro. Got stuck in roadworks on m6 and m40 albeit just speed reductions. Journey comp said 55.7mpg with avg speed 54.4mph but don't know how accurate it is. Will repeat going home tomorrow after a full up. If accurate, I don't think it's too bad for the 328i.

Eco pro is fine for motorways at 70+, but doing 60 and below ...no! At that speed I'd be falling asleep! Eco pro seems to mean I consistently get 500+ per tank and 550+ on A road work. Short journeys and up and down dale kill the fuel consumption, as does winter diesel and the cold. |

I've tried Eco mode between Somerset and Durham, with trials of sticking to 70mph for 30 mile stretches, then 30 mile stretches of 70mph in comfort mode, all on the M5. I can honestly not see enough difference to warrant losing the engine's throttle response when I want to do a decent overtake.
My 330d gets mid 40's - I'm not prepared to get too OTT about saving every drop of fuel. Quote:
But whatever way you look at it, these BMW 3 litre diesels are pretty good with fuel. |

It's the actual delta in mpg' you can get. As mentioned previously, my mpg (using Eco app on connected drive) gives me trips that rerun 25mpg and ones that return 51mpg, it also shows % of journey in Eco mode. Most I have managed so far is 70% of a journey, I need to play the other 30%. 25mpg is not in Eco mode, I never realised a Diesel engine sounded like that at 4k revs lol. |

i do the manchester to epsom & back every weekend. the run being 99% motorway returns about 55mpg southbound and 52 northbound. this is in comfort mode and pootleing along at 80ish. theres a good stretch of 50mph restrictions too.
ive seen over 60mpg but traffic was literally 50 for most of the journey. ive found theres almost no benefit atall in driving this car at the 60/70 mark you may aswell get a move on because that is when the engine is happyest |

I regularly do a 50 mile each way journey nearly all on the M3/A303.
With 3 passengers in Eco pro, I get around 44mpg going South and around 50 going North Seems to be about the same sticking to 70 or pushing on a little. Like previously said, I guess the engine is in a better Rev range?! When I get home, I punish my self for such a dull time with a burst of Sport/Sport+ , just to cleanse the soul

I concur, above 80 seems to be where the consumption starts to drop. I've averaged 55mpg at 70mph (sitting around 80) and 60mpg at 50mph (around 60 mph). Both journeys over 100+ miles with a car warmed after a fuel stop.
Don't make a habit of it, usually low to mid 40's - town driving drags it down. On the other extreme, been as low as 12 - not in town!!! |
