I too hate people hogging lanes BUT the penalty is a little too harsh i reckon. Should have just been fined, points can and probably will effect his work.

Problem is there is very little traffic cops actually on the road to monitor these idiots

All they are interested is sitting with the gun out for a quicker buck

I'm all for it, but that's extremely harsh. 5 points is a lot for middle lane hogging.

£100 fine would be enough.

Seems a lot of grey areas in this new rule. There is an obvious middle lane hogger who is sat there mile after mile with no traffic in the inside lane, and the guy doing say 65mph in the middle lane with with hgvs doing 55-60 in the inside lane in staggered convoy style.

It's ridiculous that laws like this have to exist at all. What is wrong with the world.

Not sure what you mean there bud.

Do you mean we should all be perfect lane users from birth, or that it doesn't matter what lane you use?

If you mean the latter, then you're one of the reasons we need that law!

People should be sensible enough to do the right thing. It's sad that a law has to be used to enforce that behaviour.

No I don't hog the middle lane. I'm stuck behind the guy who is.

It's always been in the highway code, but not a specific offence. It's seems obvious to us because we can't thnk like someone who thinks it's is the right thing to do, so the 2 sides will never agree.

They could always have done folks for causing an obstruction, but rarely did if ever.

But it's so bad now it needs to be an offence so they can easily ticket it.

The guy in the story must have had some aggravating circumstances because the offence is only 3 points fixed penalty normally.

It went to court too for some reason.

If there was a convoy of trucks in lane 1, he'd be overtaking. As long as the gaps between the trucks didn't warrant moving in for a very brief moment. What's grey about that?

Excellent news. Serves the guy right if he indeed have plenty of opportunities to go to the left.

But wish we were more like European countries like Germany. 130km/h limit and everyone drives on the right (1st lane).

Same in France and Spain. People sit up your ass and expect you to move over.

They'll then move over in front of you once they pass, leaving around 4 inches between your front bumper and their rear as they do. They are pretty aggressive when it comes to lane discipline, but it works well and sadly for us, it means that they get more out of dual carriageways than we get out of a 4 wide M25.

My friend drives all over the continent, from what he tells me they aren't as well diciplined as we like to think they are! Plenty of lane hoggers there too

It's very very easy, even Americans could understand the rule.

Unless you are over taking.

Keep left.

End of.

I suspect it's a bit more complicated than that in reality.

For example, on a quiet motorway in the wet it's not a bad idea to use the middle lane because it's drier.
