NYPD Officer Walks Into Middle Of Highway
Looks like NYPD is up to abuse of power again. Cop stops all traffic in middle of 495 (LIE) on a sunday afternoon. For those of you who aren't around the area, there is TONS of traffic heading out to Long Island around this time. They stopped traffic and gave out enough "lane splitting" tickets until quota was reached and then went on their way. This traffic had a ripple effect for the entire day. Absolutely sickening abuse of power if you ask me... Here is a comment from the poster of the video: "Nope I wasn't riding between lanes when cops take my key off. I was just behind a car I was my lane. I had Arai helmet motorcycle jacket and gloves now I am not riding without gopro camera because of I need to proof it they're really liar I will show you when they're harassing motorcycles again" |

Looks like entrapment to me. They created the situation where bikers would split lanes then pull them over and ticket them when they did.
Then again they all probably split lanes all the time and never get a ticket. That's why the cops did it, as a response to reported lane splitting. However, that doesn't make it right. You can't punish someone for something they might have done previously. Just my $0.02. |

correct me if I got this wrong. They stop everyone who needs to be somewhere to get those hooligans on two wheels who are usually much better at minding other traffic and anticipating situations than us car goofs are, and ruin everyone's day by making them run late?
I should've been a cop. I'm already a bitch so this would suit me perfectly.

That is insane.
They should be charged by the EPA, how many gallons of fuel were wasted in this, how many tons of pollution. If anyone died and an emergency vehicle was delayed these piece of shit officers should be held accountable. |

This is a screwed up thing to do but I'd imagine this was a sanctioned "operation" they also should have had on hi-vis clothing on if they were going to be in the middle of the highway like that

I mean its NYPD did we all forget what happened with the Range Rover incident...
I don't blame the cops for having a road block but not holding up traffic to that extent. If bikers were disobeying the law and putting others at risk they should be stopped. See riding with a pack and with no brains can lead you to trouble. |

As much I do not like some of the motorcycles and the stupid things they do on the highway. the Police in this situation are worse stopping all kinds of traffic. When I lived in CA lane splitting is legal and actually encourage, they do not want bikes sitting in stop and go traffic they rather they keep moving since more times than not they get hit in stop and go traffic if they are stop as well. Idiots behind them do not see them stop and hit them.
Took me a while to get use to bikes splitting lanes, having them come by you while your stop in traffic can catch you off guard. |

I can admit that I split lanes often in traffic. If I am on a 3-4 lane EXPWY like the LIE, or on the SS PKWY/BELT PKWY and traffic is moving less than 30 MPH, which is about 90% of the time Mon-Fri, I will split lanes. If traffic hapeens to be going abouve 30 MPH, I will behave on two wheels.
I usually use my bike for commuting to and from work, so I dont ride with big groups and cause a lot of trouble. I just enjoy being on two wheels, and since I don't get a lot of free time due to the nature of my occupation, riding to and from work is some of the little "me time" I get. When I split lanes, I can tell that some car drivers get a little upset about it. I don't do this to piss off drivers, and I certainly don't think I own the roads. I feel safer splitting lanes to get up to the traffic light, because I don't want to get rear ended by someone texting, reading, drinknig their coffee, putting on make up or tending their kid while driving a car. Yes, I see everything that a lot of distracted drivers do behind the wheel ,because I am watching their mirrors to see what they are focused on while I am splitting lanes. The reason why traffic is moving at less than 30 MPH on a wide HWY with no traffic lights is because so many drivers are distracted. So please give the motortcyclists a bit of a break when they are splitting lanes. Trust me, the motorcyclist is NOT driving distracted, and the motorcyclist is NOT impeding or holding up traffic. That biker went past you in a matter of 2 seconds, and will not stop your flow of traffic. I am not trying to be rude with anything i have typed here. I am just saying that no driver should be upset with a biker for splitting lanes, because that action did not slow you down, make you late, or ruin your commute in any way.

Plus, motorcycles are air cooled. Sitting in traffic will kill a motorcycle, and THEN you will have a disabled vehicle in front of you, possibly with a tow truck to obstruct a few lanes of traffic to get the burned cycle up on the bed.

Neither of my motorcycles are air cooled (2009 Ducati 848 and 2004 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R). The problem with sport bikes like these is the emphasis on doing just enough to make it work all in the name of performance and weight reduction. Neither of these motorcycles will survive heavy stop and go traffic. Riding in this mess of DC Metro area traffic, I have had times where I needed to either pull off the road to let my bike cool down or duck walk the bike till traffic was moving with the bike shut off. The radiators are not very big in relation to how much heat these superbike engines give off.
With that said, I would never lane split with the typical idiot cager on the road. In my personal opinion, it's more dangerous than sitting behind cars in your lane. I got into a conversation about this with the head riding coach for California Superbike School about lane splitting. He said even though it's legal in California, he won't do it. Too risky in his mind. That says something coming from a guy who clicks off lap times almost as fast as the pro racers around any of the tracks they run their school at. |
