107k miles. What would you do?
Turbos still boost well but are rattling worse and worse. Only a matter of time. Engine runs great. Had this car 5 years, it is paid for and I don't plan on selling any time soon. Seems pointless to spend money replacing stock turbos with stock turbos. Would you upgrade to RB/Vargas at this point or is that too much of a risk to the engine? I do oil changes every 3k miles or so and don't drive it hard at all, just like the occasional highway passing power.

I'm going to upgrade as soon as the stockers die. Vargas just dropped the prices on all his turbo upgrades for the N54

If all it does is rattle but runs well otherwise just run the turbos you have now into the ground before upgrading. My old and replacement turbos rattled. I'm living with rattle.

I'd do an oil analysis (blackstone) make sure things are good, then put the bigger turbos on and have fun. I put VTT 2+'s on my car with 100k on it, at 112k now, be mindful of maintenance.

Man, I wonder when 100k miles on a German car, especially BMW became high mileage... If you're well maintained, I would not for a second be worried about upgrading turbos at 100k. This forum gives everyone a false impression that BMW's self destruct at 100k.

+1 - I'd get a blackstone analysis just to ensure nothing is going out internally then upgrade to a VTT or RB kit. Plenty of life left at 100k so long as you've kept up with maintenance.

The engine is rarely the problem with mileage. Your stock snails are already on their way out. I'd upgrade turbos, then go FBO and it'll be like having a new car!
107k here on mine, last 30k have been FBO. Stock turbos replace under warranty at 35k miles, so these have almost 70k on them, half of which has been high boost. These cars can be great so long as you can keep up with maintenance and repair. The drivetrain is very strong. |
