BMW using new oil?

So my M5 was complaining about oil being low per usual. I decided to stop by the local dealership yesterday to pick some up and they gave me this stuff. They said that they stopped using Castrol and now only use this. I put it in my engine and went about my merry way. I think I probably gained an extra 10 horsepower. Anybody else put this in their S63tu yet??

Interesting, my first hearing of this

My F10 has not had the oil consumption issues like my E90 M3. Is that common on this generation?

Went to my local dealership last week for a service and got Castrol, never seen that before. Unless it's only in the US

Oil consumption is the same for me with the new stuff. Just added my first quart after approx. 1500 miles.

Yep same here. All kidding aside, last year I switched to Liqui-Moly for about 6,000 miles. During that time the car did not ask for oil almost until I hit about 6,000 miles after the oil change to Liqui-Moly. I switched back to the BMW oil when the dealership offered me one last oil change before my factory maintenance ran out even though it wasn't time for an oil change yet. I'll be switching back to Liqui-Moly in a couple of thousand miles for sure!

Never in all my years of owning performance cars have I seen a more "obstructionist" stance taken by a manufacturer to the consumer gaining information about maintenance specifics than the one taken by BMW. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my M. That said, from the "no manual/redundant" dipstick, to the intentional omission of specific capacity information in the owner's manual, to even the silly repackaging of oils (yes, I know many/most auto manufacturers actually do this)... BMW more stridently recommends that you use "their" oil than others, and it seems the BMW consumer is more prone to do so, largely due to the fact that the BMW consumer is vastly less inclined to know how/want to do his/her own maintenance... I guess it is a demographic of the typical buyer. As a NASCAR fan who does his own maintenance, it appears that I probably don't fit the demographic... To each his/her own-I guess...

What does everyone do for top offs? Just go to dealer for a free quart?

Either that, or if I am in a pinch, I stop by Autozone. But when I switch back to Liqui-Moly I'll keep an extra bottle in the trunk just in case.

I'm at 27k miles and haven't needed to add a drop yet.

I have always got BMW oil at my dealer although the one they use is in a silver bottle.

When I was in Miami the dealer there allowed me to use my own 0W-30 in oil changes and then he would give me 8 bottles of BMW oil to take home since that is included in the free BMW service and he wanted to keep his books correct. I would then give away those bottles of BMW oil to a friend who put it in his Land Rover.

Used no oil in 7,500 miles in my 14 M5 vs my 13 M5 which required a top up every 500 or so miles..

Curious, not to re-open a tired debate, but how did you break-in both cars?

I don't think I drove my 14 less aggressively during the run in period..but I suspect that could be a reason or the oil might have changed? I can't really do a comparison on that basis as at around 2000 miles I remapped the ECUs and increased the hp and tq numbers..

Yes, BMW switched to Shell GTL on 1 January 2015 worldwide. (2nd to do so after Ferrari)

There are multiple threads around on all the boards on this.

All the Gas To Liquids (GTL) base oil comes from Qatar but the additive packages are regionally added at one of 4 mixing plants.
You can see where each one is mixed by the "made in xxx" on the back of the BMW branded bottle

To throw something else into the mix - I drove my car gently for 140 odd miles, then tried hard-ish break in (within the guidance in the handbook): -

at 1200 miles - oil display at half (run in service to bring back to 100%)
at 6000 miles - oil display at half
at 10500 miles - oil display at zero (topped up by dealer)
at 10850 miles - full oil change (Jan 2015, so most likely Shell)
at 15000 miles - oil display at 100%, i.e. oil consumption significantly reduced
