I'm taking my mom to Germany in September. My first time going and not being in the military. What would anyone suggest about exchanging currency. I figure I would be ahead using cash. My credit card charges three percent for overseas transactions.

Unless you have reasons not to apply for a new card, for travel to Europe I recommend Barclaycard Arrival Plus, which has no foreign transaction fees and works as a proper chip-and-pin card, which is going to be really useful for buying subway or train tickets and other transactions where there's no live cashier.

Several Capital One cards have no foreign transaction fees. Fidelity has a checking account call "MySmart Cash" which offers zero foreign transaction fees and up to 5 or 6 worldwide ATM withdrawals without any ATM service charges anywhere in the world.

If you have a Schwab or Fidelity account set up a separate "banking" account with them. They'll give you a no-fee Visa ATM card. Use it to withdraw cash with no fee & fair conversion rate - much better than stand-alone currency exchange cos.
I pay $ for most things except meals & lodging. As others said get a no foreign transaction fee Visa if you don't have one. |
