charcoal filters
Does the new M3 have the US only charcoal filters like the M5 and M6? Haven't been able to find a mention of them on the site. Thanks, Rick

On the M5/M6 when you remove the charcoal filter it can result in @ 15 horsepower. The filter is in the air filter box and can be removed. The
charcoal filter is US only and supossedly has to do with emissions when the vehicle is turned off, I believe. |

This topic has been discussed in depth, even accompanied by dyno reports at m5board.com. There is an "extra" filter the so called charcoal filter in the intake system of the M5/M6 that (I think) is supposed to reduce fuel vapor emmsisions back out of the intake tract. Removing this filter has shown to provide some gains on the dyno.
So the question is. DOES THE M3 HAVE THIS. I'd be willing to bet. I am surprised no current owner can/will verify. |

I opened the air box up the other day (and proceeded to drop one of the screws into my engine bay ) and the air filter and charcoal filter are one piece. When I removed the filter on the M5, it had two separate filters, one orange and one black (the black being the charcoal filter). No such luck with the M3. If I were to remove the only piece in the air box there would be no filtration device.

Thanks for pointing out my repost...... I would be writing BMC to have them develop a filter for the M3.....it will be good for 10 hp.... And the car will sound better.

And better fuel "economy"....and sharper throttle response....did I mention better sound? Don't buy K&N, they are crap. Hope BMC makes a filter for the S65

Factory over-oiled K&N filter blew my MAF on the Max. $400 fix right there...

The big heartburn everyone seems to have with the K&Ns is oil trashing the MAFs (correct me if there is another heartburn I don't know about). Oil would be a non-issue with the M3 since the S65B40 doesn't use MAFs.

Over-oiled filters might still cause a problem with gunking up the air trumpets or the butterfly valves, not to mention the airbox.

With the M5 / M6 filters, poor fitment and also the surface area was really small when compared to the BMCs or stock filters. The M5 / M6 guys who ordered the K&N saw decreased power, higher temps and worse throttle response. K&N also brought out a Typhoon Cold Air Kit but this threw codes like crazy and some thought it was slower than stock. See below....which would you rather have??? Some one is going to have to be a test subject.... K&N Stock (Yellow) and BMC (Red)

Obviously, the K&N doesn't have the same filter surface area.

I resized so it is easier to look at.... The molding on the BMCs are also alot better. I would start checking the BMC website. They have extensive support for BMWs so it is just a matter of time.... K&N best for the Ford Ranger. http://www.bmcairfilters.com/

For the record I deleted that post after deciding that "surface area" could be defined more than one way. But the T-Bone is quicker than the eye!
