I have no idea what this is/did this to my paint

Hi all,

So I wash my m3 a few days ago and notice what looks like water spots on my paint afterwards once I've dried it - like something spilled on my paint and dried clear, but looking like water spots - a bit gray but transparent/translucent. I'm in a rush, so I figure I'll wipe it with some quick detailer.

I get around to wiping it with quick detailer and it doesn't react. When I spray it, the surface feels matte and a MF towel does not glide smoothly over this area. And it's a bit tacky.

Now I think: Contaminant that feels tacky, let me bust out the clay bar.

I spray some more detailer and wipe all over it with clay - the clay gets embedded in it and does not pull it up. The surface is tacky to clay. It doesn't change, except now it's got clay bar stuck to it. I wipe it with more quick detailer and it doesn't change, nor does the clay get picked up. So now I've got a yellow cast to this problem.

I literally have no idea what this is now. MF + Quick detail does nothing, clay not only does not pick it up but is actually getting stuck to it. I'm afraid of busting out the DA polisher but that would be my next step.

I'm also a little concerned that someone spilled something on my car (i.e. soda) and that it dried on and etched the paint.

Here's a picture - note that the yellow is the clay bar residue. The actual problem did not have a yellow cast to it, but is grayish as shown here.

Try goo gone or mothers RRR. Either way, afterwards you should re-wax or seal or whatever your regiment is as both of those will eat the top layer of way/protectant/sealant.

Have you tried some All Purpose Cleaner?

Almost sounds like tree sap or something like that...

Goo gone tried....removed the stuck on clay and maybe a little bit of whatever is stuck on there, but after 2 minutes of rubbing with a MF towel it wasn't continuing to lessen so I stopped.

Now really concerned and unsure what to try next...

Buff it out. If that doesn't do it try a light wetsand.

Not funny.....

....ok, kind of funny - as it doesn't look far off of that.

Use a mild abrasive compound with a cutting pad. It should come right off...and if it doesn't, it means you need something more aggressive. Certainly not going to do damage in doing so...

If you have tried to take it off the surface (washing, adhesive remover, etc..) and it isn't responding, it's probably in the paint. I agree with Chris s in that I would try hand waxing first, then hand polishing and then using a polisher - increasing in aggressiveness.

I bet a microfiber cutting pad with light polish will probably do it. My favorite is the Optimum Hyper Polish. I would be shocked if one of these steps won't get it out.

Griots has great customer service. If you don't have easy access to a detail shop of some sort with the above tools, call them. They can probably coach you over the phone after looking at the picture. Let us know how you get it out.

I've got some total swirl remover 3.0 I'm going to apply with an orange pad on a Double action orbital.

I don't care if it takes 20 minutes to get it all out, as long as I see some progress.

Use a scratch remover, it should come right off. I had something similar happen and it was from a leaking pipe in a garage I parked my car in.

I would wash it (foam it and everything), if that doesn't do the trick then bug and tar remover (1z einzet). Don't polish etc. until you have tried that.

Update: The car had been washed thoroughly (including with some pressurized hosing), goo b gone, clay bar - nothing worked.

I polished it with a light polish (Wolfgang total swirl remover 3.0) and it removed ~50% of the discoloration/flaw but I see some distortion in the clearcoat. Please note: I spent about 7-8 minutes with a random orbital and a light polish in one area and it only removed 50%.

It is working - which is very encouraging. I'm going to step up the polishing effort with a more serious cutting pad and polish (which I have to go buy, as I've never needed anything more than this before).

Worst case scenario I'll ask a professional to do some light wet-sanding.

I think I would just take it to someone to have done...lots of comments on here about thin clear coat/paint...You have made a valiant effort though!

There's plenty of clear coat to work with. Get a more aggressive pad and polish. it will come out...

Just ordered a more aggressive lake country pad and Meg's M105 + Megs M205.

I'm looking for the 105 to be the more aggressive polish. If it needs more than that, I'll have a professional wet sand it. Hopefully will try this weekend.

Please make sure to keep your machine moving otherwise you might burn the paint and create bigger problem for yourself.

If you park your car in an underground garage, it's probably the pipes overhead that leaked on to your car. That happened to me but thank god it was just water. You would need polishing compound then wax and polish and it will fix the problem.

He should be okay with his DA polisher, but it isn't completely fool proof, so I agree with you in the keep it moving dept.

Is it a lime scale deposit from hard water dripping on it? Before you do anything agressive, try a 1:1 mix of vinegar and water and see if it wipes off.
