CA Black Plates?

Hey F80 friends anyone have black California plates? Any pics? Can they still be ordered? Any other state with throwback/cool plates that look clean on the F80?

I've been thinking of doing this since they announced it a few years back. I wanna see them first though. I hope they retain the old school "CALIFORNIA". I'm tired of that script logo.

Production is scheduled to begin on these plates late June, 2015. So figure they should arrive in July.

Wow thats cool! I didnt know about these and I just ordered regular personal plates about a month ago, still waiting to get notification of pickup. I wonder what would happen if I put an order in for one of these now...

Anyone have experience with ordering personalized plates in CA? How do they handle the registration stickers? Are they included when you turn in the old plates, or do you have to repurchase them? I still haven't put on my original plates and stickers, wondering if its worth saving them a few more weeks to put on the new plates..

Another way of doing this is just taking the plates on your car now and having them repainted in black and yellow. I have been involved in classic cars for awhile now and there are a few really good guys out there that restore and repaint old CA plates. My neighbor did this, he has an all black Mercedez Benz G-wagon, it looks great since the plate now matches his truck. The only thing with doing this is that your plates will no longer be reflective.

Another problem with this is that it is illegal. And if you're gonna do it, might as well go with euro plate or no plate at all; as that is even better looking.

Once these legacy plates come out i am not sure how painting your own plate to match would be illegal. I have been following this since it started at the DMV and one of the things i have seen on the FAQ's is that the new plates might not even be stamped like the originals:

Q: Are the Legacy Plates going to look exactly like the license plates issued in the 1960's?
A: No. Current law requires license plates to be reflectorized and modern manufacturing processes may not allow for an exact replication of the original plates. The images shown on the website and REG 17L are for illustrative purposes only. The final design of the plate will differ; however, as many characteristics of the original plates as possible will be applied.

But you are getting a brand new non BSM car. Would probably look really nice against that new color too.

I'd think they'd keep the retro type for "California" as its largely targeted for vintage vehicles of that time, and having that dog shit cursive type would kill the vibe a bit So I assume someone could make their own as long as they did that, and like you said make it reflective. I'm sure it'll fly til you get pulled over for something else and then they take a closer look.

(c) A person shall not erase the reflective coating of, paint over the reflective coating of, or alter a license plate to avoid visual or electronic capture of the license plate or its characters by state or local law enforcement.

4464. A person shall not display upon a vehicle a license plate that is altered from its original markings.

So potentially it could be two strikes. One for obscuring readability by painting over the reflective surface, and another just for having altered the plate.

I'm not saying I agree with it or not, but it does seem that painting your own plate would be breaking the law.

Is this saying there is no additional cost for a personalized plate?
