BETTER than BMW's Extended Warranty

Geico has mechanical break down insurance coverage. It has a straight $250 deductible. Only for new cars. After the 4/50 warranty runs out, you can do mechanical repairs and only pay $250 per repair total. So it protects against any big repair bills. It only costs $70 per year and lasts up to 7/100, just like BMW's warranty.

For wheels/tires, they tried to sell me on a 5 yr warranty that would protect tires on a pro-rated basis if they got damaged by road hazards. It's not worth it. (It was $900)

To protect your wheels, get full coverage. Most insurance companies cover wheels in their full coverage. Unlike the dealer tire/wheel warranty, insurance even covers cosmetic damage.

To protect your tires, buy from Costco. They give free road hazard protection. Or you can buy it from an online dealer like tirerack.com

Not to say it isn't good sometimes, but I hate this whole racket of insurance being offered on every friggin item you own/buy.

Buying a TV... better get some insurance.
Tires? Yup, better insure those.
Cellphone? Laptop? Keyboard? Sofa? Fridge? Stove? Bed? Insurance!!!
Cat/dog/fish?? Insurance. Table? Yup, insurance.

Insurance companies only give you "comparative" tires to the ones in your car if something happens. I think that means you won't get run-flat tires in your car if you use them.

Good question wondering the same thing. Makes no sense to buy it now. How would it work for those that are not insured with Geico?

The mechanical breakdown coverage must be started within 15 months of the original new car purchase date. I'll probably buy it after 12 months since I plan to keep the car for a long time. There's no reason to buy it too soon since you're covered by the BMW warrantee. Basically, you must have ~3 years of redundant coverage with the factory warrantee. The breakdown coverage must be continuous until the 7th year of the car. You can’t stop and restart the coverage. Also, there is no guarantee that the price will not go up, although customer service promises it won't rise too much over the years - but who knows?!? If the price doesn't rise too much into the future, it sounds like a good deal.

makes me wonder why insurance companies offer this kind of service to BMW, does not mean our BMWs break down more often than other brands?

My liberty mutual also have something similar.

Geico offers the breakdown policy offered for all brands, so it's not special to BMW's. If BMW's break down more often, I presume they would set higher rates for them. I was quoted about $35/6months for my BMW, but I have no reference since I didn't get quotes for other brands and makes.
