Do you turn off your car while pumping gas?
I just thought of this, and i remember back 2012 my uti teacher had told me it really wasn't necessary, that he had never had a problem before. Then went on and explained about the static on clothes that we can possibly carry to create a spark that would ignite while pumping (which ive seen in a video). But is the engine running any difference? I have been doing it for years now and also never had a problem. I actually figured out you can hang the cap on the door by looking at some other bmw guy next to me doing it lol, (i know i need my owners manual, ill get one). But yeah just curious if others dont turn their engines off like me.

back in the day that would throw a nasty check engine light for evap control. there's an air pump in the car when it's running that tests for vacuum/sealed gas tank (tries to suck air, if it doesn't get resistance there's a leak)
if you fill while the car was running, the open flap would allow air in, fail the check and throw dash lights till it decided everything was ok (or you reset it) on my e90, I turn the motor off, but leave the radio/etc on since I don't lock the car... no issues from that |

No, I've never pumped gas into a running car. I realize it's not likely to cause a problem (as aren't cell phones, actually) but why take a chance?
If it's really cold I can use the REST feature on my 07. But filling up takes all of 3 minutes, I rarely think to use it then.

The water pump will keep the coolant circulating through your heater core for 10-15 minutes after the engine is OFF and keep blowing hot air.

Its unlawful and illegal to pump gas while the engine is running. Says it right next to the pump. It might be okay to but in IL its illegal and unlawful lol
Who the hell would you want to leave the car running anyways. |

Nope. But I have actually never pumped gas into my e90, does that disqualify me from this thread?

Seriously, I once took off with the gas hose still in my car. No explosion. It was in nj so I wasn't allowed to pump my own gas. I walked into the gas station to buy some candy, walked out and got into the car. I forgot that the attendant was pumping my gas. I heard a pop and someone yelling. Looked back and some guy was waving his arms and looked pissed. I got out of my car and saw in horror that I pulled away with the gas hose!

For some reason having someone else pump my gas would annoy the shit out of me. I don't know how you NJ people deal with it. I get thoughts of careless people spilling fuel and and scratching up my car, lol.
To answer the question, I always shut my car off when pumping gas. Most recently when I found out you can keep the car running with comfort access and still lock it I've left it running for quick stops at the gas station. |

Living in california my whole life, i didn't realize it was illegal to pump your own gas in many states. I don't see a reason to leave your engine on while you're pumping gas. You're only wasting gas, albeit minimal amount, while the engine is idling. (then again, i'm used to non-moving idling on the highways here in LA) Also, someone can just hop in and steal your car lol.
