Extended Warranty

What's the best extended warranty for bmw? From the dealer or outside extended warranty?

Some pertinent facts
  1. BMW dealers can offer extended warranties by BMW
  2. BMW dealers can offer third party extended warranties
  3. Both of the above can come in several different coverage levels at different
    prices

One needs to carefully understand...
  • what explicit items are covered and
  • what explicity items are NOT covered by any plan, as well as
  • the number of miles currently on your car
  • the number of miles that you expect to add during the policy period
  • what items are more likely to fail at what mileage levels

BMW offers Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. Silver covers explicit list which leaves off many items. Gold is comprehensive but not includes nav and entertainment electronics. Platinum is most complete...but there are things NOT covered even under Platinum, and which ARE covered by a new car warranty!

Everything Wilt said is correct. Here is my experience with factory extended warranty. I chose not to go with third party backers because I have heard of difficulties getting claims approved and because the factory warranty price I received from Jeff (see below) was not much more expensive.

I recently purchased a 84 months/70k mile Gold policy because I have low miles (25k) and don't have the navigation option. A 100k mile (comprehensive from beginning) is also available.

Most forum members have used Jeff Steel from Passport Auto and he is by far the best price I found. Here is his email if you would like to receive a quote (I sent him my VIN number and estimated mileage): jeff.steel@passportauto.com
I mentioned that he was recommended E90Post members and he responded promptly and the process was very smooth.

I compared the BMW offer with Route 66...

...and it wasn't even close. Route 66 killed them on price ($2,000) as well as the coverage period (5 years, 100,000 miles). BMW wanted $2,500 and it was only good to 90,000 miles.

Before anyone tells you Route 66 won't pay claims, I call bullshit. They only sell thru reputable financial institutions and not direct (bought mine from Members 1st Credit Union). There is no way in hell that my credit union would sell this warranty if it wasn't solid gold...and it is.

Oh, they were recommended by someone on this site, so I Googled the company, sent them an e-mail, and they got back to me to let me know where the warranty was available in my area.

There is a thread here about Route 66 and they have seemed to be amazing. Turbo replacement, no problem.

Contact Route 66 first. They will tell you...

...which financial institutions in your area offer their warranties. As I mentioned in my first reply (above), they don't sell directly to the consumer; you must make the purchase from a financial institution that offers them.

I paid $2,000.00 plus tax for their 5 year or 100,000 mile warranty. Should your car be in a 'total loss' accident, they refund the remaining balance.

As I mentioned, my credit union would not offer this product without properly vetting it and making sure they pay their claims...and they do.

Check out that Route 66 and they referred me to a bank and got the pricing and everything n I call endurance it was $50 more than Route 66 but it's easier process. They cover 100k in 5 years and only 18 months payment after that I own the policy for 3 1/2 years of no payment.

I purchased the Route 66 exclusionary policy for 5 years/100,000 miles from my CU for around $2400. Damn good price considering it covers just about everything.

+1 for Route 66, they've been good to me so far. My 07 had about 72k miles on it when I purchased my 4/48k policy, so I'm good until the car is 11 years old or has 120k miles on it. I've only used the warranty once so far and my mechanic took care of everything with Route 66. I just brought the car in, gave them my warranty info, and picked up the car in a couple of days, no further effort on my part.

That's not a question any of us can answer, from the looks of it. I Googled them, sent a message, and they called me back the same day to tell me where I could buy their warranty. Here's the link and good luck;

I called them and they said sure we can the main street deluxe plan with 36m/36,000 miles, they did not give me a price because I need to go through a bank, but do they really cover well? I have heard mix reviews but 60% good things about them

A third party extended warranty does not provide new OEM components, they reserve the right to provide "like" components. This means used or salvage vehicle parts. For those outside of the original 4yr/50k original factory warranty, I would rank Fidelity first and route 66 a distant 2nd as Fidelity does pay the full labor rates and provide new component parts nationwide. Fidelity is the actual underwriter for the original factory warranty of every Volkswagen and Audi in the united States. We should all do our due diligence, however I felt that I share reality. www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com -MrAwesome

That's interesting, where does Fidelity say their extended warranties use new OEM parts? I don't see that anywhere in their brochure or website.

Also approximately how much is the Fidelity one? Another advantage of the Route 66 warranty was the low price. It seems like the warranties dealers sell all cost around 4k

I was really interested in buying the fidelity warranty until I looked up the reviews. They're pretty bad.

Not sure if anyone has experience with these guys "the warranty group" but I bought this from my dealer for my 07 335i with 70k on it. Got a 3/36 warranty for about 3k would have to go look at my paper work. 10 months into ownership I am over 3k in warranty work.

Oil filter housing gasket, interior fans, oil pan gasket, tranny gasket and sleeve. Oil change included in oil pan gasket and tranny fluid etc for tranny gasket. Car is an auto.
