How to remove ashtray trim?
Guys,
I am changing the ashtray over in my centre console in front of the shifter and need to remove the wood trim. Can anybody tell me how to separate it from the ashtray? Thanks |

When I wrapped my interior, I had just finished pulling hard on all the panels and my muscles were in hulk mode. I removed the screws from the ashtray piece of the center console and had a look at how the ashtray lid was attached. I then foolishly assumed (without finding the evidence I was looking for) that it was clipped on like everything else in the car, which was reinforced by satisfying popping sounds, as I applied the screwdriver carefully to the edges. When the thing finally popped off in my hands, I looked down with dismay, I had simply broken off the plastic where it was molded to the tray below. Still, in the end it was no big deal, I even repeated the mistake deliberately on the rear ashtray, and when I'd finished plastidipping them, I carefully glued them back on using the snapped moldings (liberal application of strong glue). To this day they are holding up great, you would never know they were removed.
Having said all this, I am not responsible if yours break in a way that is less friendly than mine, however, knowing what I know now, I would probably do it again the same way, although I dread to think how much force will now be required to break the glue I used if I ever want to open them again, I may have made them permanent now, oh well.

There is a really old DIY someone did converting the ash tray to a sunglasses holder. It's in the DIY section. It shows how to remove all the center console trim. You can search for it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I've removed the ashtray itself, I just don't know how to separate the wood trim from the ashtray lid and replace it with another.
Edit: I have found this link which gives a bit of a guide. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...44#post3658044 Last edited by NBTBRV8; 05-06-2015 at 04:49 AM.. |

just a tip but order some non-marking pry tools from amazon for this. That way you won't scratch up your interior during this job. They are also really handy for removing the trim piece to fix your cup holders and for removing door panels.

I replaced the ashtray with a sunglasses holder in my car. The trim pried off, but be very careful doing it: I cracked the first piece of trim I removed.
