Girlfriend is looking for a car

I've started looking at a 1 series for her, while shes stuck looking at a mini.

I'm doing plenty of research on pros and cons of both, but this forum seems to be full of knowledge, something not always found on other forums..

Any opinions and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks people!

Got my girl a 128i, she absolutely loves it.. Even though it's physically not too much smaller than my 335i she thinks of it as her "pretty little bimmer" haha... Now she kind of wants the 1M or 135i though so I think that means all my verbage is starting to sink into her head hahaha!

Since you asked, perhaps letting her get the Mini without a lot of pushback from you would be a good thing. They tend to remember this stuff. I'd offer some other alternatives with sound reasoning and then let her decide. It's her $$$, right?

Good luck.

Oh its not a battle or disagreement, she likes both, and I'm on board with whatever she chooses. Her money, her car.

Still new to this forum.. totally forgot about going over to 1addicts. and a mini forum respectively.

northamericanmotoring.com for the Mini's.

Mini's are built from BMW dna. I have an R52 MCS with one of the last W11 supercharged engines. My only advice on this is to only consider an S. I don't see much point in a normally aspirated Mini.

I know how this works:

If you buy her the 1 series if there's ever an issue she will blame you, its your fault, should've bought the mini, etc.

You buy her the mini and if there's a problem she will skip over the fact that it was her choice and you will still have to deal with it but she at least won't be a brat about it.

Let her test drive a 1M (if someone out there is actually selling one) and see if she still wants a dinky ass Mini.

I kid I kid. A Mini is fine. Just push her on an Cooper S model. All the other models are lame.

God help her if she buys one of the leftover Coupes collecting dust and cobwebs at the end of a Mini dealer's lot. Seriously, it really does look like a car wearing a cap backwards.

Go with the Mini. Lotsa chicks like it. I personally think it has all the fit and finish of a cardboard box (and a ride to match.)

Here's what my research on Mini turned up when I was looking:

Worst used car: Mini Cooper S
When it comes to choosing a used car, you can put the odds on your side by choosing a model that performed well when new and has a great reliability track record. Of course, reliability hiccups can happen with any used car, but the Mini Cooper S has the worst history among all cars we have tracked over the past decade. Sure, the car is cute and delightfully entertaining, but year after year, the likelihood of having a problem that requires a repair is heartbreaking. And among the 17 trouble spots we track, engine major, engine minor, engine cooling, fuel system, body integrity, and body hardware have issues at an alarming rate. Although Consumer Reports often recommends skipping an extended warranty, the Mini Cooper S is a case where the investment would be a good hedge against potential problems. Joining the Mini Cooper S as among the worst used cars are the Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T and Ford Fiesta—although these models have fewer model years to anchor their position among the worst of the worst

If you want reliable and easy to maintain, a 128i should be better than an MCS.

This has been entertaining. That yahoo article touches on some serious points to consider though. The search continues

Not to flame, but you've left out a huge amount of information for any of us to make a recomendation... Like is she buying new or used? Does she have kids? How does she drive; agressively, or normal? What is her planned use for the car, DD commuter, or weekend getaway? How long does she intend on keeping it. How is she funded for maintenance and repair? How big are her hooters?...

Stuff like that.

Hooter size is directly proportional to amount spent on a new car.

Personally, I owned two MINIs. If you decide, well actually IF SHE DECIDES, then let her get the new F56. The R53 and R56 was complete crap. Meaning the quality wasn't good at all. It had so many issues. The F56 is finally a BMW built car, especially the motor will be pretty solid. I like that they added the 1.5L 3cylinder, it's a nice daily with great MPG.

I'd go with a 2.0L Fiesta for $15K.
