Walnut blast pics after only 35,000 miles
So I thought since my car's been pretty much tuned since it was a few months old (Procede stage 1 for its first four years, then Cobb stage 2+ for the last couple), I might as well get it done.
I was up in the Vancouver, BC area, and a local enthusiast who has done it a few times did it for me. The guy is a real perfectionist and changed the gaskets on the intake manifold as well, plus one other larger green one that I don't recall what it was for. Couldn't believe how much gunk was already in there after just 35,000 miles. It looked great afterwards, but I haven't managed to drive the car yet, so will report back tomorrow as to how it feels. Here's a few before and after pics. Look at how shiny the valve looks! . |

Yeah I'm in same boat! If it looks like that at 35K I cant even imagine!

Got mine done at 42k, and they weren't terrible, but I noticed a big difference. My before and after pictures were about the same as yours.

Had mine done around 90k, it made a HUGE difference. I'm sure I was losing HP at that point. Consider this part of regular maintenance every 2-3 years.

Sheesh, probably freed up 15-20HP too. I've seen some impressive before and after dynos related to walnut blasting.

did mine at 78k and it was really gunked up in there. Replaced my pcv valve and vent hose and ordered a catch can to help combat this. Still would want to do a walnut blast every 30k to make sure it stays nice and clean in there. Difference was night and day after getting this done.

An OCC & RB PCV valve will reduce build up by a little bit from what I've read. But carbon build up is exactly that, carbon, from burnt fuel gases seeping back up onto the intake valves, add some oil blow by and it sticks even more.

Hi All. Long time lurker, first time poster. Saw this thread and had to add my own pics because I had this done yesterday.
Done with 114k kms (71k miles) at the BMW dealer for $399 Canadian ($330 US). Dealer said it was a flat fee standard service, so no hourly charges or extras for parts/materials. My butt dyno says I have smoother acceleration and that the power comes on a bit faster. Had them take before and after pics. |

Wow, that's an amazing price. Why don't you share which dealer and which city you are in?

BMW London in London, Ontario on Wharncliffe Rd S.
A bit more detail- The car has never been tuned until last week when I put in the Cobb v2 Aggressive, replaced the plugs, coils and installed the BMS DCI. Figured the carbon blasting was a good last step for my spring time upgrades. Money well spent I would say. Last edited by therealphil; 05-07-2015 at 01:38 PM.. |
