Door ding... Options?

Let me preface by saying I had my 335is for 3 years and never once had an issue. I've had my M3 for 3 weeks and I already have a ding on the door. I'm assuming someone swing their door open and obviously didn't leave a note. I'm always careful with parking and try to avoid other cars...

The ding is small, but noticeable, and call me OCD, but it makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

Go to a detailer have them buff it out and do a paintless dent removal, might be around $300 but I had a similar mark on my Audi S5 and after some wet sanding buffing and paintless dent removal you couldn't ever tell. Good luck.

Fixed the images for you.

Coincidentally I had PDR done on my wife's car this morning. A mobile PDR guy came and did the repair. He charged $80-$100 per panel, for 2-3 dings per panel. Usually the PDR guy looks for an access point into the door - either through the windows or breathing ports on the door edge to do the repair. If there is no access, they drill a small hole on the door edge, do the fix and plug and seal the hole. Either way, it's relatively inexpensive and does the job. Looks like the damage got through the clear coat though... ouch! Dr. color chip will probably help you there.

On another note, I think my AY makes people notice that the M3 is not like the others, and I haven't had a ding to date *fingers crossed*

Haha, I'm actually in the Hopkins Club parking lot in the picture, so it's the new chemistry building or something (I'm an IS major so I'm never in those buildings)

People can be inconsiderate POS! There's no way you cannot know you ding'd someone's door. They just don't care. No matter how far away one parks, some dirtbag always parks right next to you.

Thanks, I posted using the app, not sure why it put them as links...

I might wait until I get back to California; the car will almost definitely be back when I go home this summer.

Might try and find a respectable detailer here in Maryland though if it continues to bug me...

Today, early morning at the gym, I park in the 4th and last row where there is no one. There were cars in the first row, but none in the second or third row. I come out of the gym and there were a couple more cars in first row, but still none in the second or third and one more in MY row. And, don't you know that 'one more' was parked next to me with about 50 other places available.

My first thought was...if they dinged my door...do I have a good place to hide their body?

As others have said, PDR should do the trick. My only additional advice would be to find a good, reputable person. If you've ever seen PDR done, you might be shocked how well the clear coat can stand up to abuse. They literally hammer it. Thus the reason you need to find an experienced, good person. Otherwise it could look like Woody Woodpecker worked on your car.

Should I bring BMW official touch up paint for them to use? I posted in the regional forum to see if people had suggestions on where to go.

I'm going to call the BMW service guys I've worked with here in Baltimore and see if they can recommend someone. (or do you recommend against that, will they to do it themselves? Which would probably cost way more...)

I'll be honest though. I think I know who did it. I'm living in an apartment building here and my garage neighbors have two decent sized SUVs. They also have youngish kids. I'm thinking the kid probably swung is door open and didn't even think about it... Parents probably didn't even know

You can approach them, but I doubt anything will come of it besides having them be more cautious. When mine got hit I called the cops (dude stayed parked next to me). Cop came, the color of his paint on my car matched his truck, the door met the connection point exact where he hit it, but he denied it and without a witness cop said he couldn't do anything. Convo might be worth it just to avoid it again. And I def wouldn't go to the stealership for this, they'll have a 3rd party come in and fix it (a guy you could've called yourself) all the while making 100% profit and that's if you're lucky.

If it's PDR, they won't repaint anything. That's the beauty of it. Nothing is the same as factory paint.

Dr. Color Chip is awesome stuff. You CANNOT mess up with it.

I have been working on a chip in the hood of my wife's Benz. A rock chipped the paint off down to white. I have been layering Dr. Color Chip each day for three days (Now I'll wait a few before adding more). The chip is filling in and looks so much better. That plus PDR will save you tons. Don't use BMW touch up paint though as you won't be able to A) layer it on and B) you won't be able to clean up a mistake very well. Check it out.
