Checking out a car and having pre-purchase inspection far away
Hey guys,
So I found a 2011 328xi that I really like, has all the options I want and colors, only 49,609 miles and asking $18,590. The only problem is, it's 3 hours away. If I wanted to buy it, how I would go about a pre-purchase inspection? Where would I bring it (another dealer, garage?) and would I have to schedule something ahead of time? This would be my first BMW and I've heard a pre-purchase inspection is really important on these cars. Or maybe I should just be more patient and wait till something is closer? Haha. Always wanted one of these cars. Thanks! |

I bought a car once sight unseen, but with a PPI. Contact the owner...tell him your plans, then call the closest BMW dealership and ask if they offer PPI's. You will probably have to have it towed there, but it is worth it. If the owner doesn't want you to do a PPI, walk away. If the BMW dealership doesn't offer it, ask someone at the dealership for a reputable garage for a PPI. Good luck...

Thanks for the help guys! I think I'd want to at least go down there and take it for a drive first before anything else. If I'm happy with the car after the test drive and plan on purchasing, is that the time to take it for a PPI before any negotiating? How would I go about doing that if I'm 3 hours away, just call different shops/BMW dealers in the area to see who is available the earliest so I wouldn't have to come back?

I always negotiate prior to the inspection and make my offer subject to inspection. That allows you to negotiate again based on any problems that are found.
If you inspected before hand then you would be in a weaker position IMO. |

I should add that when I've bought cars in other cities I have negotiated before making the trip. I leave a refundable deposit and then make the trip. Do your test drive and personal inspection first, if it still looks good, then do the professional inspection.
