Blown Charge Pipe! Aftermarket replacement?
Just purchased (3/31/2015) a CPO 2011 e90 335i with sport package, and I'm in love! However, I was pulling away from a traffic light and, BOOM my charge pipe blew off! Had no idea what it was at the time. After getting it towed to the dealership, and waiting for it to be fixed I did some research and figured out what had failed. $700 later I have a shiny new factory charge pipe. After this install I have noticed a slightly delayed throttle response. listed below are some questions I would like for y'all to discuss.
1. Are aftermarket charge pipes nube friendly to install? 2. Brand recomendations for charge pipes? / Affect on CPO warranty? 3. Could my dealer have not installed the part correctly resulting in delayed throttle response? / what can I do about it? |

1. Yes, simple install from everything I've read.
2. VRSF, ER, and BMS seem to be the most popular. Ask them to take it off and get your money back, buy an aftermarket one for a third of the price. |

This is what I was so upset with! Service rep told me that the part was plastic and not covered under CPO, I was just over 50k when the event occurred, don't know if that had anything to do with it?

Call the sales manager you purchased the vehicle from and also speak with the service manager, you should not be paying for 100% of that repair. If it were my car, and I just purchased a CPO from a dealer, I wouldn't pay for any of it.

Oh, believe me I did! the exhaust rattle happened the evening I home from picking the car up at Momentum BMW in Huston, TX. Yes, I drove like 13 ours in one day to pick up this thing. So I called the CPO Sales manager and he sounded like he was going to replace it. Well, I get a follow up call after he consults his techs and he tells me he can't replace the bad muffler , and that i should go to Midas or something and he might be able to help me out... One week later this happens. Not only that, BMW of Mobile, AL breaks my engine cover and doesn't even reattach it AND leaves a grease stain on my A pillar. This pushed me over edge and now I have an open case with BMW of NA looking into it for me. Only reason i didn't just return it is b/c I live so far away and work 6 days a week.

Kind of sucks and seems random. I heard of a guy running 19lbs of boost on stock charge pipe no issues. And guys like you blowing on stock boost. Definitely get aftermarket. Good to know that CPO does not cover it, even more reason for me to not care about dropping aftermarket pipe in.

CPO warranty doesn't cover charge pipe because it's plastic? That sounds ridiculous. I would study CPO warranty fine print.
As far as aftermarket charge pipe install, I just installed a cobb on my current 335i a few days ago, just as a precaution because I don't trust stock CP. Quality is good and took about two hours to install going slowly. Some of that time was me trying to find a torx bit, so it would have been quicker if I was more organized. |

Either way, I got a stock replacement from BMS. Nice to have peace of mind knowing it won't randomly explode again.

Do you have the invoice? I would love to bring the to BMW of NA attention...and ask them why mine was not replaced under CPO.

That's rough. You'll be able install an aftermarket CP pretty easily, just get the torx drivers ahead of time and some engine assembly lube to use on the o ring, which will be reused from the stock CP.

Also, I got a stock replacement aluminum BMS Charge Pipe for $239 and installed it myself. It was actually really easy. Well worth it if you don't want a blow off valve, which I did not. http://burgertuning.com/chargepipe_u...5_N54_BMW.html If you're interested.

Crazy. Been reading this forum for months now and not heard of this problem, then it happens to me last week and two threads on the same issue since. Maybe selective reading. I'm not surprised at the price though. I paid around $800 for a battery replacement at the dealer. Will never go to a dealer again in my lifetime. Seriously shocked at BMW quality. Before this car and this forum I thought they had a good reputation for quality cars
