Unreliable and drinks gas like whoa (8-9 MPG Avg). Set aside a few extra dollars for problems. I almost went with the M5 of the same generation but didn't want the head aches.

They really aren't that great of cars....
They were heavy, didn't handle as well as they should... many engine issues, clunky transmissions and have really debatable looks. It is surprising they go so cheap, I remember coming across a few during my continued e92 M3 search and always found it odd they are "cheaper" than M3s... even though the M6 retailed for much more. M3s are way more desirable.

yeah I've just been looking at some. they backs on those cars are beautiful but something about the front end throws me off, kinda looks like a shark lol. but i just found it crazy that a 100k car is going for that cheap with not that many miles, and a v10.

Lol if you are remotely concerned with "value" or "out of warranty repairs", the S85 is categorically NOT the motor you want. It's an extraordinary motor, IMO the best BMWM has produced since the S54, but it's damn close to a race motor and will happily extract five-figure labor charges on a routine basis.
It's the type of motor that can genuinely cost $20K a year to keep running. But I look a the displacement and powerband, and wonder "where is the boost?!?!?"

Do people try to get extended 3rd party warranties on them? I could handle it being in the shop every once in a while if it wasn't me paying for it.

The S85, in my opinion, when not accounting for reliability, is one of the best engines ever made--period. Not just by ///M, or production engines, but ever. Only the S70/2 & S54 come into my mind when mentioning ///M's V10.
The S85 is truly one of the best ways a consumer can get to a racing pedigree without having to step into upper echelons of "super-cars" (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.). Unfortunately while the price of the complete package for an E60 M5/E63 M6 barely approaches the sticker price of the aforementioned brands, the engine upkeep isn't nearly as forgiving. It is a V10 though, so it comes with the territory. We'll undoubtedly never see anything like it again, especially due to rising emissions restrictions. It's certainly not a DD (unless you have the deep-pockets to afford so) and would behave best as your Sunday driver. Do not be mislead by the going prices of them now. Just because you can find them for 35k and less, doesn't mean their upkeep doesn't resemble their 100K+ original price tag and extremely rare engines. With that said though, if I could afford it, I'd buy an E60 M5 in a heartbeat. There's truly nothing quite like it in the world and never will be again. |

A lot of the 3rd party warranties that people acquire/mention on this forum (such as Route 66) do not cover ///M vehicles. So I'd imagine it would be difficult to find a company that will warranty said cars. |
