Excessive chipping on side skirts and quarters
I am having a problem with paint chipping from what appears to be rocks/debris coming off the tires and hitting the side skirts and rear quarter wheel flares. My car just went over 1000 miles and it is starting to look really bad. On the rear quarters the paint damage is really evident just above the factory protective film. It looks like it is slowly getting sand blasted. My car is black so it is just that much easier to see the damage. I can't imagine what this is going to look like after a few thousand miles.
I told my dealer about it at my first service and they said a BMW rep will need to look at it. What is the chance that BMW will do anything about this? It is not like it is a stray rock hitting the car. It clearly looks like a defect either with my paint or the design of the car. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? |

I would be surprised if there was a paint defect and BMW did anything. If you're on the freeway a lot, particularly where there is are cement barriers on one side of the lane you are in. The small stones fly up and ricochet off the wall. Where do you mostly drive? Freeway? Side streets?
You could maybe see about getting a clear wrap over those panels, ASAP.

Most of the spots look to be clear coat damage. I think I am beyond putting protective film on. The factory film is already beat up. Both sides look the same.
This one is of the door edge behind the front tire. It is actually damaging the door more than the rocker panel. |

sorry to see this. after only 200 miles I had a few similar chips, so I went ahead and touched them up and applied large spots of PPF around that area. Unfortunately I think the car is just prone to throwing stuff up right there.

The closer I look at the car the part of the rocker panel inside the front wheel well is all beat up and is missing the paint and the lip of the rear bumper inside the rear wheel well is the same. |

Do you have any pictures of that show the damaged areas from further away? I'd like to see what areas are having problems so I can have film installed on those spots.

Lots of sympathy, been through this with my X5 and with Carbon Black paint it resulted in a look exactly like yours. I was praying this wouldn't be an issue with the M3 but it definately is.

I don't. You would need to wrap the entire rocker and 8" up the door. You would also need to remove the factory film on the quarter panel flare and install an new piece the goes 6" higher and starts inside the door and wraps around to the rear tire well. The rear bumper would also need to be protected behind the rear wheel well.

I took a look on xpel website 2 weeks ago and looked at it again today. Seems like they have all the templetes for the M3 now. Anyways, I used the same PSS tires on my Interlagos Blue M5 and didn't have any paint chips from the tires at all. Could this be a problem with the black paint? |

Boy that really sucks. I know in the winter time there are a lot more stones on the roads - that looks like it's getting sand blasted. Getting a clear bra on those areas might protect it from further damage but doesn't solve the issue. And, they'll get chewed up fast. If others aren't reporting that, there has to be something on the route you take?

Was planning to have the front of the car done along with part of the bonnet and roof
will now look into getting the rocker panels covered and the rear fender as I plan on going with more aggressive wheels |

I guess the cinder and sand that they drop around here for snow is causing this. There are big piles of it everywhere. |

I have the same problem on my M 4 I spoke to the dealer and they say they have not seen the problem before. I purchase the appearance package that included the installation of 3M on the front and mirrors but did not include the area on the lower plastic panel just in front of the rear wheels where the paint is severely damages in just 2000km. If this was a problem they were aware of the 3M application should have included these vulnerable areas. I intend to continue to Persue this with the dealer and if necessary with BMW Canada.
