Exclamation Major burning smell... Suspected Chronic Turbo Failure

Bugger it - just when I thought my car was running perfectly, I now have this very intense burning smell when the engine is warmed up. Smells like burning rubber or oil, and it's really bad. Can't work out where it's coming from - seems to be pervading the whole car, and it's fairly noxious when the car is parked in the garage...

Going to dealer first thing tomorrow... hoping it's something that's resting on the exhaust, and not the turbos on their way out

Doesn't sound to good.

I have noticed a burning smell in my car from time to time, but it's not that strong. I think it's down to the fact that the N52 engine runs VERY hot as does the exhaust.

Hopefully that's you problem too .. bit of mud or something on the exhaust - have you been on a dirt track recently?

not being funny, but I did think of that!!! Saw a news report saying a cat had got stuck in the engine bay of a car, and I was wondering if that was what happened in mine...

Fortunately not though, or perhaps unfortunately?

UNfortunately IMHO

It does happen. I once spent a good half hour under a Toyota Landcruiser several years ago in Oman trying to coax a stray cat off the top of the gearbox (using my lunch to do so). After a while I considered firearms and/or explosives but didn't want to hurt it (it was a new Landcruiser after all) It had obviously got in there overnight as it was warm, and I noticed a funny squeaking as we drove along. I actually said to the guys I was with "sounds like a cat".... Oh how we laughed

It finally came out and was fine (no doubt Helen will be pleased to know).

I hope it turns out not to be an animal, and a mechanic can find it quickly for you.

Bloody hell Tony - not something else. Hope you get to the bottom of this problem A.S.A.P. Presumably you haven't noticed any oil leaks then?

Bumps - Yes I am pleased to hear the cat was ok

A colleague at work used have a pair of those funny looking bald cats. They used to like to sleep on top of the front wheels. Her husband forgot to check one day before setting off out and was never forgiven for the resultant mess. The pussy was not on the wheel of fortune!

Jason, do you mean the sphynx cats, weird looking buggers squashed or not

On our local BBC news last week, a cat travelled from Hull to Norfolk under the bonnet of a Focus and survived!

Not sure of the breed but probably looked like a spam fritter after it's 9th life!

I'm sure that problem will get sorted quite quickly, Tony.

Looks like another member is having a similar problem, albeit in a diesel.
