ECU Removal for flashing/tuning

Hey all!

At Vivid Racing we enjoy the opportunity to work on customer cars and use them as development mules. As a result, we have our really great flash tune that instantly gains another 90HP over stock and equally great torque gains!

But to get that flash tune in, we need your ECU, and its not exactly the easiest job to do, it takes removing some parts and some time. But to get all that extra power? Worth it.

See how to take out your ECU on our VR Tuning blog here.

Thanks for providing that. Do you know how many lbs the different parts need to be torqued at when reinstalling everything?

I'd need to double check with our technician, but from the info I have found the intake manifold bolts should be 15nm or 11 ft.lb

So looks like you guys open/reseal the ECU vs drilling into it?

Yes, I am not sure where you would drill into it

Not sure but I know the EAS/ESS method is to drill unless you pay extra to have it opened up like this.

Good stuff thanks for the DIY!

How many actual customer F8x are running around with your tune these days?

Thank you,
I have personally seen 5 or 6 F8x cars here that have had the ECU done this way, I'm not sure the grand total of ECUs that have been mailed in for this application. It certainly is not as popular as our less invasive tuning box solution, but I'm sure as more and more big builds start coming it will turn up.

Its actually easier to open/reseal the ECU, which we've been doing for some time now.

Ahh nice to see you have revised your process. Have you posted this anywhere? I missed it

Thanks, any info you could provide would be appreciated.

Btw, is there a gasket for the intake manifold that would need to be replaced or something?

With how new the cars have been the gaskets were reused after inspection. I am sure that will be short lived as the miles start piling up

Hi there, I have question regarding the ECU tune I just did on my 2018 M3. Power gains are definitely noticeable, however what is also noticeable is the exhaust is a lot quieter. I have the BMW MPE exhaust, prior to the tune it was much loader. Is this a common thing?
